Second Grade:

1. Geographical reference to the locality of the event, as given in the

Teacher's Class Chart,' for the number and second line of the Manual.

2. Give topographical and statistical information, and catechise.

3. Communicate the History in the words of the first Grade, orally, and catechise in few words.

4. Communicate the History in the words of the lesson for the second Grade, orally, in sentences, and catechise alternately.

5. The class to read singly a sentence from the printed tablet.

6. Catechise in the History throughout.

7. Give the explanations of the words, and catechise alternately.

8. Recommence and catechise on the explanations, transposing their order.

9. Give the picture definition, and recapitulate, by catechetical examination, the History, Geography, and Explanations.

10. Exercise in the 'Preceding History.'

11. Geographical Exercise, by tracing the History in the Teacher's Class Chart. 12. Deduce Practical Lessons' from the History.

Third Grade:

Follow the same order as in the second Grade, changing the exercise in the 'Preceding History' into an exercise in the 'Preceding Parallels,' which implies increased mental cultivation.

In the above Grades no use has been made of the Gospel narratives, in their entirety; but while the lessons in these Grades are not the whole history from the authorized version, without alteration or omission, they are not paraphrased, but as much in the words of Scripture as their necessary condensation will permit.

Fourth Grade:

In this Grade the authorized version of the Gospel narratives, without alteration or omission, as given in a 'Harmonized Continuous History,' is the reading book; having the History corroborated and illustrated, by reference to the Acts of the Apostles and the Epistles. The additional exercises for this Grade are

1. Read the 'Continuous History, or Harmony of the Gospel Narratives.'

2. Teacher to give an analysis of the harmony, and catechise the class in the

same.

3. Class to read in the New Testament the harmony of the several accounts; some having their Testaments open at Matthew, others at Mark, others at Luke, others at John, as there may be occasion; each looking into the chapter and verse referred to for that which is supplemental, and which at length constitutes the harmony of the complete history.

4. Refer to other portions of the Gospels for parallels in event and doctrine. 5. Refer to the Acts' for obedience of the apostles to the instructions of their Lord, and corroboration of the miracles and doctrines of Christ.

6. Refer to the Epistles for doctrines illustrative of the Redeemer's words and works, as recorded in the Gospel narratives.

Fifth Grade:

In this Grade all the preceding is to be adopted, and a further development of the reflective faculties attempted, by a searching of the whole of the Old Testament Scriptures, as well as those of the New, in connexion with the Gospel narratives of the Life of Christ, and as illustrative of THE TRUTH of all Divine Revelation. Whatever the abilities or previous acquirements of either the teachers or the taught, here is provided 'milk for babes, and strong meat for those that are of full age.'

GENERAL EXAMINATION OF THE CLASSES.

After the usual time allotted to training, place the children conveniently, (in the gallery if there be one,) and, instead of the address which is ordinarily given, let the children be catechised in all the divisions illustrative of the portion of history which they have been taught, beginning with the lowest Grade, ascending to the highest, and carefully guarding the lower Grades from unfair treatment, such as suffering the higher to answer the simple questions intended only for the lower. And if the teachers have diligently fulfilled their duty, then every scholar, from the infant in the lowest Grade, up to the youth of sixteen or older in the highest, will know something of the subject—and the value of the system will be satisfactorily proved.

In this system, sympathy is our impetus; and, when sanctified by love to God, PREPARATION for the delightful service will be eagerly made—

PUNCTUALITY will become natural—

PRAYER for God's blessing will be humbly and confidently poured forth. And DILIGENCE IN TEACHING will be conscientiously practised;―indifference, where existing, will give place to a holy anxiety to be accounted' a workman that needeth not to be ashamed.'

May the Divine blessing abundantly descend, and the labours of Sabbath School Teachers be graciously owned by the Father of mercies, and the Rising Generation soon be trained to ascribe, with intelligence and from the heart, 'WORTHY IS THE LAMB THAT WAS SLAIN TO RECEIVE POWER, AND RICHES, AND WISDOM, AND STRENGTH, AND HONOUR, AND GLORY, AND BLESSING.'*
