I believe this 20-year-old book is still an invaluable resource for newcomers in the field of Critical Management Studies willing to reflect on paradigmatic and theoretical backgrounds. Alvesson and Deetz provide a synthesis of debates ranging from fairly (at first fairly complex!) theoretical ones to more practical implications. The slight imbalance toward postmodernism that I perceived at the beginning is indeed balanced with further consideration of Frankfurt Critical Theory in such issues as constructionism vs. structures, discursivism vs. realism, subjectivity vs. objectivity and their methodological consequences. All in all, a nuanced and integrative position is framed which I reckon would worthily guide and solidify thoughtful research.
