XL. HELL.

Warnings of Its dreadful miseries—Its Inhabitants.

1. How does the Psalmist describe the punishment of sinners?

The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. (9 P. 17.)

2. What does Christ say of those who deny him? Whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my father which is in heaven. (10 Mt. 33.)

3. What sentence will Christ pass on the wicked? Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. (25 Mt. 41.)

4. Must every sin, however dear, be relinquished, lest we be cast into hell?

If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. (5 Mt. 29, 30.)

5. Whom should we fear?

Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. (10 Mt. 28.)

6. Is the punishment of the wicked everlasting?

Their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. (9 Mr. 44.)

7.Will their character as well as their state be then unalterable?

The time is at hand, He that is unjust, let him be unjust still; and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still; and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still; and he that is holy, let him be holy still. (22 Rev. 10, 11.)

8. How does Christ represent the state of the pious beggar, and the rich sinner after death?

And it came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried, and in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. (16 Lk. 22, 23.)

9. Will Christ who is now made known as a Saviour, hereafter appear to take vengeance on his enemies?

The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven, with his mighty angels, in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power, when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe. (II. Thes. 1. 7 to 10.)

10. What will be the punishment of sinners?

The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb, and the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever, and they have no rest day nor night. (14 Rev. 10, 11.)

11. Did God punish the rebel angels?

God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment. (II, Pet. 2. 4.)

12. How will God punish Satan?

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night, for ever and ever. (20 Rev. 10.)

13. What will be the portion of hypocrites?

The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprized the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings ? (33 Is. 14.)

14. What will be the punishment of the "evil servant," who says, "My Lord delayeth his coming," and therefore plunges into sin?

The Lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (24 Mt. 50, 51.)

15. In the time of God's vengeance what will sinners

of all classes say to the rocks and mountains?

Fall on us and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of his wrath is come, and who shall be able to stand? (6 Rev. 16, 17.)

16. What will Christ say to those who have made many professions, and had many privileges, but have still been "workers of iniquity?"

me,

I tell you, I know you not whence ye are: depart from all ye workers of iniquity. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last. (13 Lk. 27 to 30.)

PRAYERS

IN THE EXACT WORDS OF SCRIPTURE.

My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord: in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. (5 P. 3.) I laid me down and slept; I awaked, for the Lord sustained me. (3 P. 5.) The day is thine; the night also is thine; thou hast prepared the light and the sun. (74 P. 16.) I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning. (59 P. 16.) Unto thee have I cried, O Lord, and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee. (88 P. 13.) Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not. (17 P. 5.) Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe. (119 P. 117.) I am but a little child, give therefore thy servant an understanding heart. (I. Kings, 3. 7, 9.) Order my steps in thy word, and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. (119 P. 133.) I have sinned, what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men. (7 Job, 20.) O God, thou knowest my foolishness, and my sins are not hid from thee. (69 P. 5.) IfI regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me. (66 P. 18.) Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy, remember thou me for thy goodness' sake, O Lord. (25 P. 7.) God be merciful to me a sinner. (18 Lk. 13.) Enter not into judgment with thy servant, for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. (143 P. 2.) Cleanse thou me from secret faults: keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins. Let them not have dominion over me. the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer. (19 P. 12, 13, 14.) Him hath God exalted with his right hand, to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. (5 Acts, 31.)* To God only wise be glory, through Jesus Christ, for ever. Amen. (16 Ro. 27.)

Evening Prayer.

O GOD of our salvation, thon makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice. (65 P. 5, 8.) The sun knoweth his going down. Thou makest darkness and it is night: man goeth forth unto his work, and to his labour, until the evening. (104 P. 19, 20, 23.) Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. (121 P. 4.) Thou compassest my path, and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me, even the night shall be light about me, yea, the darkness hideth not from thee, but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me and know my thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (139 P. 3, 11, 12, 23, 24.) Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving-kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin: for I acknowledge my transgression; and my sin is ever before me. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother
