2 Triumphant host! they never cease
To laud and magnify

The Triune God of holiness,
Whose glory fills the sky;
Whose glory to this earth extends,
When God himself imparts,
And the whole Trinity descends
Into our faithful hearts.

3 By faith the upper choir we meet,
And challenge them to sing
Jehovah on his shining seat,
Our Maker and our King.
But God made flesh is wholly ours,
And asks our nobler strain;
The Father of celestial powers,
The friend of earth-born man !

4 Ye seraphs nearest to the throne,
With rapturous amaze

On us, poor ransomed worms, look down
For heaven's superior praise;

The King, whose glorious face ye see,
For us his crown resigned;

That fulness of the Deity,

He died for all mankind!

C. M.

FATHER, how wide thy glory shines!

How high thy wonders rise

Known through the earth by thousand signs,
By thousands through the skies.

2 Those mighty orbs proclaim thy power,
Their motions speak thy skill;
And on the wings of every hour
We read thy patience still.

3 Part of thy name divinely stands
On all thy creatures writ;

They show the labour of thy hands,
Or impress of thy feet.

4 But when we view thy strange design
To save rebellious worms,

Where vengeance and compassion join
In their divinest forms;

5 Here the whole Deity is known,
Nor dares a creature guess
Which of the glories brightest shone,
The justice, or the grace.

6 Now the full glories of the Lamb
Adorn the heavenly plains!
Bright seraphs learn Immanuel's name,
And try their choicest strains.

7 O may I bear some humble part
In that immortal song!

Wonder and joy shall tune my heart,
And love command my tongue.

ALL-CREATING God!
At whose supreme decree
Our body rose, a breathing clod,
Our souls sprang forth from thee;
2 For this thou hast designed
And formed us man for this,
To know and love thyself, and find
In thee our endless bliss.

SECTION II.

FOR BELIEVERS FIGHTING.

265

1

MAY thy powerful word
Inspire a feeble worm

To rush into thy kingdom, Lord,
And take it as by storm!
20 may we all improve

The grace already given,

S. M.

To seize the crown of perfect love,
And scale the mount of heaven!

[blocks in formation]

SOLDIERS of Christ, arise,

And put your armour on,

S. M.

Strong in the strength which God supplies
Through his eternal Son;

Strong in the Lord of hosts,

And in his mighty power,

Who in the strength of Jesus trusts
Is more than conqueror.

2 Stand then in his great might,
With all his strength endued;
But take, to arm you for the fight,
The panoply of God;

That, having all things done,
And all your conflicts passed,

Ye may o'ercome through Christ alone,
And stand entire at last.

3 Stand then against your foes,
In close and firm array;

Legions of wily fiends oppose
Throughout the evil day;

But meet the sons of night,
But mock their vain design,
Armed in the arms of heavenly light,
Of righteousness divine.

4 Leave no unguarded place,
No weakness of the soul,
Take every virtue, every grace,
And fortify the whole;
Indissolubly joined,

To battle all proceed;

But arm yourselves with all the mind
That was in Christ, your Head.

[blocks in formation]

BUT

On faith's victorious shield;

Armed with that adamant and gold,
Be sure to win the field:

If faith surround your heart,
Satan shall be subdued,
Repelled his every fiery dart,

And quenched with Jesu's blood.

2 Jesus hath died for you!
What can his love withstand ?
Believe, hold fast your shield, and who
Shall pluck you from his hand?
Believe that Jesus reigns,

All power to him is given;
Believe, till freed from sin's remains,
Believe yourselves to heaven!

3 To keep your armour bright,
Attend with constant care,

Still walking in your Captain's sight,
And watching unto prayer.

267

Ready for all alarms,
Steadfastly set your face,
And always exercise your arms,
And use your every grace.

4 Pray, without ceasing pray,
Your Captain gives the word;
His summons cheerfully obey,
And call upon the Lord;
To God your every want
In instant prayer display;
Pray always; pray, and never faint;
Pray, without ceasing pray!

THIRD PART.

S. M.

1 IN fellowship, alont draw near,

Approach his courts, besiege his throne
With all the powers of prayer:
Go to his temple, go,
Nor from his altar move;
Let every house his worship know,
And every heart his love.

2 To God your spirits dart,

Your souls in words declare,

Or groan, to him who reads the heart,
The unutterable prayer:

His mercy now implore,
And now show forth his praise,

In shouts, or silent awe, adore
His miracles of grace.

3 Pour out your souls to God,

And bow them with your knees,

And spread your hearts and hands abroad,
And pray for Sion's peace;
