At the end of each lesson you will find a list of the harder words. Turn to the word list on page 22, for example: The first word is "dramatized." It is printed in heavy type. Then it is printed again in lighter type, with marks to show you how to pronounce it. Sometimes, when the marks will not tell, the word is spelled according to the sound, to make it easier. But this is not often done, for it is better to see the word spelled right, and the marks will generally tell you how it is pronounced, if you learn how to use them. In Book Three you learned the use of three marks, the accent (), the marks showing the short sound (~), and the long sound (-) of the vowels. This is the way they look: ŭ as in up ǎ as in făt I as in ice a as in name Ŏ as in not ĕ as in bĕd ō as in ōld ē as in evening oo as in food y as in fly Ĭ as in it oo as in foot y as in myth Now you will learn the marks for other sounds: ê as in whêre i as in sir ï as in machine as in pull as in son as in miçe as in wolf o as in move ô as in soft û as in fûr as in rule as in cage ş as in iş th as in then x as in exact n as in ink Letters that are not sounded are printed in a different kind of type, as people, weather. 12 |
