A Song of goings up for Solomon. 1. Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

2. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

3. Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord : and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

4. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

5. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.


Second psalm of instruction from David to his people, after be had

concluded the erection of the tabernacle, and made it ready to receive the ark.

1. BLESSED is every one that feareth the Lord ; that walketh in his ways.

2. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with tbee.

3. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.

4. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord.

5. The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion : and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.

6. Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children, and peace upon Israel.

1. Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:

1. Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.

2. Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.

3. If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

4. But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

5. I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.

6. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning : I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

7. Let Israel hope in the Lord : for with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.

8. Aud he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

1. LORD, my heart is not haughty, por mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.

2. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself,


a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.

3. Let Israel bope in the Lord from henceforth and for ever.


Prayer of Solomon. The temple which he had built being finish

ed, one thousand years before the birth of the Messiah, of which it was a type; and all being ready for its dedication, and to transport the ark of the covenant there from the tabernacle of David on Mount Zion; Solomon (accompanied by the elders of Israel, the chiefs of the tribes, and courses of priests, and an innamerable multitude of people) went to the tabernacle of David on Mount Zion. Before the priests transported the ark from thence to the temple, Solomon beseeches the Lord to accomplish the promises he had vouchsafed to David his father. 1 Kings viii, 1–4. and 2 Chron. vi. 41, 42.
