[blocks in formation]

THESE selections are gathered for the convenience of congregations desiring to make the concerted reading of Scripture portions a part of public worship.

The Psalms are by their liturgical form and history first in fitness for such use but not to the exclusion of much besides, including many stately and resonant passages from the New Testament.

The Revision of 1881-1885 has been followed, with the incorporation of some of the marginal readings, and also of some of the preferences of the American company. Their decision for the direct transfer into our use of the name JEHOVAH is gladly accented in the nersuasion that the chance is af

SELECTIONS FROM HOLY SCRIPTURE.

FOR RESPONSIVE OR UNITED READING IN PUBLIC WORSHIP.

Selection 1.

PSALM I.

LESSED is the man that walketh not

in the counsel of the wicked, Nor standeth in the way of sinners, Nor sitteth in the seat of scoffers.

2 But his delight is in the law of Jehovah; And in His law doth he meditate day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the streams of water, That bringeth forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also doth not wither; And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4 The wicked are not so; But are like the chaff which the wind driveth

away.

5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For Jehovah knoweth the way of the righteous: But the way of the wicked shall perish.

PSALM 2.

HY do the nations rage, nd the

gether, Against Jehovah, and against His Anointed, saying,

3 "Let us break Their bonds asunder, And cast away Their cords from us." 4 He that sitteth in the Heavens shall laugh: The Lord shall have them in derision.

5 Then shall He speak unto them in His wrath, And vex them in His sore displeasure:

6 "Yet I have set My king Upon My holy hill of Zion.

7 I will tell of the decree: Jehovah said unto Me, Thou art my Son; This day have I begotten Thee.

8 Ask of Me, and I will give the nations for Thine inheritance, And the uttermost parts of the Earth for Thy possession.

9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel."

10 Now therefore be wise, O ye kings; Be instructed, ye judges of the Earth. 11 Serve Jehovah with fear, And rejoice with trembling.

12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and ye perish in the way; For His wrath will soon be kindled. BLESSED ARE ALL THEY THAT TAKE REFUGE IN HIM,

PSALM 4.

'NSWER me when I call, O God of my righteousness; Thou hast set me at large when I was in distress; Have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.

2 O ye sons of men, how long shall my glory be turned into dishonor? How long will ye love vanity, and seek after falsehood?

3 But know that Jehovah hath set apart him that is godly for Himself: Jehovah will hear when I call unto Him.

4 Stand in awe and sin not: Commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.

5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And put your trust in Jehovah.

6 Many there are that say, Who will show us any good? Jehovah, lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance upon us!

7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, More than they have when their grain and their new wine are increased.

8 In peace will I both lay me down and sleep; For Thou, Jehovah, alone makest me dwell in safety.

3 When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, The moon and the stars, which Thou hast ordained;

4 What is man, that Thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that Thou visitest him?

5 For Thou hast made him but little lower than God, And crownest him with glory and honour.

6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of Thy hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet:

7 All sheep and oxen, Yea, and the beasts of the field;

8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, Whatsoever passeth thro the paths of the seas.

9 O Jehovah, our Lord, How excellent is Thy name in all the Earth! PSALM 15.

EHOVAH, who shall sojourn in Thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in Thy holy hill?

2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, And speaketh truth in his heart.

3 He that slandereth not with his tongue, Nor doeth evil to his friend, Nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor.

4 In whose eyes a reprobate is despised: But he honoureth them that fear Jehovah. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, Nor taketh reward against the innocent. HE THAT DOETH THESE THINGS SHALL NEVER BE MOVED.

PSALM 16.

RESERVE me, O God: For in Thee do I take refuge.

2 O my soul, thou hast said unto Jehovah, Thou art my Lord: I have no good beyond Thee.

3 As for the saints that are in the Earth, They are the excellent in whom is all my delight.

4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that give gifts for another god. Their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, Nor take their names upon my lips.

5 Jehovah is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: Thou maintainest my lot.

6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; Yea, I have a goodly heritage.

7 I will bless Jehovah, who hath given me counsel: Yea, my reins instruct me in the night seasons.

8 I have set Jehovah always before me: Because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: My flesh also shall dwell in safety.

10 For Thou wilt not leave soul to my Sheol; Neither wilt Thou suffer Thy holy one to see corruption.

11 Thou wilt show me the path of life: In Thy presence is fulness of joy; IN THY RIGHT HAND THERE ARE PLEASURES FOR EVERMORE.

PSALM 19.

HE heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament showeth His handywork.

2 Day unto day uttereth speech, And night unto night showeth knowledge.

3 There is no speech nor language ; Their voice cannot be heard.

4 Their line is gone out thro all the Earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them hath He set a tabernacle for the Sun,

5 Who is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, And rejoiceth as a strong man to run his course.

6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, And his circuit unto the ends of it; And there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

7 The law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring the soul: The testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple.

8 The precepts of Jehovah are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of Jehovah is pure, enlightening the eyes.

9 The fear of Jehovah is clean, enduring for ever: The judgments of Jehovah are true, and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

11 Moreover by them is Thy servant warned: In keeping of them there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors? Clear Thou me from hidden faults.

13 Keep back Thy servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me; then shall I be perfect, And I shall be clear from great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in

Thy sight, O JEHOVAH, MY ROCK, AND

MY REDEEMER.

Selection 3.

PSALM 20.

'EHOVAH answer thee in the day of trouble; The name of the God of Jacob set thee up on high;

2 Send thee help from the sanctuary, And strengthen thee out of Zion;

3 Remember all thy offerings, And accept thy burnt sacrifice;

4 Grant thee thy heart's desire, And fulfil all thy counsel.

5 We will triumph in Thy salvation, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners: Jehovah fulfil all thy petitions.

6 Now know I that Jehovah saveth His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven With the saving strength of His right hand.

7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: But we will make mention of the name of Jehovah our God.

8 They are bowed down and fallen: But we are risen, and stand upright. 9 Save, Jehovah: Let the King answer us when we call.

4 Yea, tho I walk thro the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me: Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and lovingkindness shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of Jehovah for ever.

PSALM 24.

HE Earth is Jehovah's, and the fulness thereof; The world, and they that dwell therein.

2 For He hath founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the floods.

3 Who shall ascend into the hill of Jehovah? And who shall stand in His holy place?

4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; Who hath not lifeth up his soul unto vanity, And hath not sworn deceitfully.

5 He shall receive a blessing from Jehovah, And righteousness from the God of his salvation.

6 This is the generation of them that seek after Him, That seek Thy face, even Jacob.

7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; And be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors: And the King of glory shall come in.

8 Who is the King of glory? Jehovah strong and mighty, Jehovah mighty in battle.
