Depression of Mind, and Encouragement. Wherefore look ye so sadly to-day? Gen. 40. 7. God hath put away mine acquaintance far from me, and hast made me an abomination unto them; I am shut up and I cannot come forth. Ps. 88. 8. I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind; I am like a broken vessel. Ps. 31. 12. Mine iniquities are gone over my head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. Ps. 38. 4. 6. Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found pone.

Ps. 69. 20. All my inward friends abhorred me; and they whom I loved are turned against me.

Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me. Job 19, 19. 21. He bath enclosed my ways with hewn stone, be hath made my paths crooked. Lam. 3. 9. Lord's mercies

that we are not consumed, because his compassions fait not. For the Lord will not cast off forever: But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies; for he doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men. Lam. 3. 22. 31, 32, 33. By this shall his iniquity be purged; and this is all the fruit to take away his sin. Isa. 27. 9. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me; the Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: Ps. 138. 7, 8.

Sickness and Death.

Have mercy up

See now, that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me : I kill, and I make alive ; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. Deut. 32. 39. I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Matt. 25. 36. O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. on me; O Lord, for I am weak: O Lord heal me; for my bones are vexed. For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks ? Ps. 6. 1, 2. 5. When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth : surely every man is vanity. Ps. 39. 11. I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sinsMic. 6. 13. I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave : I am deprived of the residue of my years. Isa. 38. 10. Heal me; O Lord, and I shall be · healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise. Jer. 17. 14. I am the Lord that healeth thee. Ex. 15. 26. Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am. Ps. 39. 4. For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living. Job 30. 23. There the prisoners rest together, they hear not the voice of the oppressor. (Job 3. 18. Help me, O Lord my God: O save me according to thy mercy: that they may know that this is thy hand ; that thou, Lord, hast done it. Ps. 109. 26, 27. What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the band of the grave? Ps. 89. 48. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: apd the spirit shall return to God who gave it. Ec. 12.7

Youth. The imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth. Gen. 8. 21. Childhood and youth are vanity. Ec. 11. 10. I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear.

This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice. Jer. 22. 21. Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right. Prov. 20. 11. The days of his youth tbou hast shortened: thou bast covered him with shame. Ps. 89. 45. Say, How have I bated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; and have not obeyed the voice

of my teachers, por inclined mine ear to them that iustrumied me! I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly. Prov. 5. 12–14. His bones are full of the sin of bis youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust. Job 20. 11. Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth : and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but, know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. Ec. 11. 9. Thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth. Job 13. 25. Wherewithall shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. Ps. 119. 9. Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions : according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness' sake, O Lord. Ps. 25. 7. Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth? Jer. 3. 4.

The Release from Bondage. They shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in a pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited. Isa. 24. 22. The Lord looseth the prisoners. Ps. 146. 7. He bringeth out those which are bound with chains. Ps. 68. 6. These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth ; and shutteth, and no man openeth. Rev. 3. 7. And it shall come to pass, that in the day that the Lord shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve. Isa. 14. 3. For, I koow the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end ; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive. Jer. 29. 11. 14. If they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction; then he showeth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded. He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity. If they obey and serve bim, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures. But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge. Job 36, 8-12. Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon; and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh. Gen. 41. 14. Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil. Ps. 90. 15. Go, and sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon thee. John 8. 11. &5. 14.
