INTRODUCTION.

THE chief object to be secured by the publication of the SCRIPTURE READING BOOK is to enable teachers to put into the hands of their scholars a series of narratives, didactic and prophetical selections, from Holy Scripture, which will give a comprehensive view of the Sacred Volume without necessitating its constant use. At the same time it should be remembered that it is not intended to attempt to drive the Bible from the school, but rather to form a basis upon which the future study of the Bible may become more easy and profitable.

The SCRIPTURE READING BOOK, taken in its entirety, will not, I think, be found too difficult for the highest standard in a National school; and a skilful teacher can easily adapt it to the capacities of children in the lowest standard by carefully choosing the simpler sections. It was intended at first to append a table of readings suitable to each standard, but the compiler thought that no such table could be drawn out applicable to all schools, and he has determined instead to suggest to each teacher who adopts the book that he should make such a table for himself.

It is obvious that although in the first instance the SCRIPTURE READING BOOK is intended for schools, either public or private, in which God's Word forms a portion of the ordinary course of instruction, it can yet be used with equal propriety by families and individuals, especially by those whose occupations are manifold, and whose leisure is too small to permit any very careful attention to the selection of passages for reading.

The compiler sends forth this book with the earnest hope that it may be the means of increasing the veneration and love for those sacred Scriptures which for generations have been the guide of God's people—“ a lantern unto their feet, and a light unto their path.”
