EXPLANATORY NOTE.

THIS

HIS book of SELECTED READINGS has been compiled on the following plan:

The King James translation has been followed absolutely. No word, phrase, verse, or chapter has been altered or transposed. Those passages have been selected which seemed to the compilers specially adapted to devotional use; and all other passages, whatever their historic, doctrinal, or other value, have been omitted. The passages selected have been brought together in the order in which they stand in the Bible, and are arranged in sections of about equal length, so far as this could be done while preserving a certain unity of thought in each selection.

The compilers claim for this book two advantages:

1. That it presents in convenient form not only those longer passages which could be as well read from a Bible, but shorter passages, single verses, and parts of verses which, though beautiful and helpful in themselves, stand so related to others in the Bible that they are unavailable for public responsive readings.

2. That a rigid adherence to the plan on which the selections have been made, has preserved the familiar phraseology and the familiar connection of ideas of the Bible, lack of which renders some books of the kind less helpful to the devotional spirit than they might be. Used in the home, the Sunday-school, or the public service, it will serve as an introduction to the devotional side of the Bible; while passages from
