ambassadors of Jesus Christ. May they be able to speak to the hearts of their ple, and make the impression upon them which an anxious desire to serve them in the most essential manner prompts them to attempt. May the best understanding everywhere subsist between the teacher and those who stand in need of instruction. May they mutually concur to render each other's labours agreeable and efficacious.

Extend thy merciful regards to all those who are in distress of any kind. Alleviate their sufferings-soften their sorrowsassuage their pains-and sanctify thy dispensations to them. Give them patience to bear and wisdom to convert their present sufferings to their future and everlasting good.

Excite in the breasts of such as enjoy the great blessing of health, a tender sympathy for their afflicted brethren, and incline them to exert their best endeavours for their amendment and recovery.

To Thee, O Lord! I now commit myself, and all in whose welfare I am interested. Dispose them and me truly to love and faithfully to obey Thee through the whole of future life; and, in the last

and closing periods of it, may we enjoy cheerful reflections on thy benignity and goodness, and on the use and improvement we have made of the talents confided to us, and the blessings by which we have been distinguished.

And now unto Thee the Omnipotent Sovereign of universal nature-the one uncreated self-existing and eternal God! may there be ascribed by all thy creatures, in all places of thy dominion, glory and honour, praise, thanksgiving, and blessing, for evermore.—Amen.

THIRTEENTH ADDRESS.

O JEHOVAH, king of glory! who art infinite, eternal, and unchangeable! with all possible veneration, love, and gratitude, would I now bow down before Thee, and pour out my soul in humble supplication and grateful praise. From the earth on which I dwell to the heavens above, even to the heaven of heavens where is thy supreme throne, all worlds obey Thee. From the dust on which I tread to the seraphim in thy presence, all creatures willingly or unwillingly execute thy purposes, and contribute to thy glory. Thy kingdom, O Lord! is unlimited and undivided, extending throughout immensity, and enduring throughout all ages. Thou reignest,

and the inhabitants of the earth who fear not Thee have cause to tremble; but the righteous may be glad and rejoice in Thee, for Thou art a righteous Lord, and lovest righteousness.

Merciful Father! may my heart be filled with such sentiments of grateful admiration and reverence, as shall uniformly prompt

me to unwearied diligence in the practice of all thy holy laws and precepts. May I freely yield all my powers to thy divine influence, and earnestly endeavour to love Thee, my God! with all my heart, with all my mind, and with all my strength. May I also love my neighbour as myself, looking upon all mankind as subjects of the same king, and children of the same family.

And may I always regard the

miseries of others as a motive to the kind and liberal exertion of all my powers for their assistance and relief, and never esteem myself so happy as when I have it in my power to promote the comfort and happiness of my fellow-creatures.

Whilst I am thus striving to discharge faithfully every part of my duty to Thee, the sovereign ruler of the universe! may I cheerfully consider every event as under thy immediate guidance and direction. May I lay aside all anxiety as to future events, and rejoice in the consolations of a good conscience. Under every affliction and trial may my heart be revived by the thought that thence my sorrows come whence all my blessings flow.

Under

Blessed Father! grant that my faith and hope may ever remain unshaken; and may

the language of my soul under the heaviest affliction ever be, "It is the Lord, let him do what seemeth to him good." "Not my will, but thine, O Lord! be done." May I be anxious for nothing that relates to this transitory world only, but in every thing by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, make known my requests to Thee, my God! and may that peace which passeth all understanding, and which Thou alone canst give, keep my heart and mind free from every perturbation and disquiet, and from every feeling incompatible with the temper and state of mind recommended in the gospel of Jesus Christ my

Saviour. In every part of the world be Thou pleased, gracious God! to diffuse the knowledge of thyself. May the universal belief of thy sole and supreme godhead remove from the earth every vestige of idolatry and superstition, and substitute in their place the pure worship of thy divine Majesty, and a ready cheerful obedience to thy statutes and commandments. May the nations of the world experience the great blessing of free and upright government, live under the wisest and most salutary laws, and witness the most unlimited and impartial administration of justice.
