They shall mount from strength to strength,
Till they reach thy throne at length;
At thy feet adoring fall,

Who hast led them safe through all.

Lord, be mine this prize to win;
Guide me through this world of sin;
Keep me by thy saving grace;
Give me at thy side a place.

Sun and Shield alike thou art;
Guide and guard my erring heart;
Grace and glory flow from thee,

Shower, O shower them, Lord, on me!

E cannot always trace the way,

Where thou, our gracious Lord, dost move,

But we can always surely say,

That thou art love.

When fear its gloomy cloud will fling
O'er earth, our souls to heaven above
As to their sanctuary spring,

For thou art love.

When myst'ry shrouds our darken'd path, We'll check our dread, our doubts reprove; In this our soul sweet comfort hath,

That thou art love.

Yes! thou art love;-a truth like this
Can every gloomy thought remove,
And turn all tears, all woes to bliss;
Our God is love.

W

HEN earthly joys glide swift away,
When hopes and comforts flee,

When foes beset and friends betray,
I turn, my God, to thee.

Thy nature, Lord, no change can know,
Thy promise still is sure;
And ills can ne'er so hopeless grow,
But thou canst find a cure.

Deliverance comes most bright and blest
At danger's darkest hour;
And man's extremity is best
To prove Almighty power.

High as thou art, thou still art near
When suppliants succour crave;
And as thine ear is swift to hear,
Thine arm is strong to save.

153

TH

HE hosts of God encamp around
The dwellings of the just;

Deliv'rance he affords to all

Who on his succour trust.

O make but trial of his love;
Experience will decide

How bless'd they are, and only they,
Who in his truth confide.

Fear him, ye saints, and you will then
Have nothing else to fear;

Make you his service your delight,

Your wants shall be his care.

WHERE can we hide, or whither fly,
Lord, to escape thy piercing eye?
With thee there is nor day nor night,
But darkness shineth as the light.

Where'er we go, whate'er pursue,
Our ways are open to thy view;
Our motives read, our thoughts explored,
Our hearts reveal'd to thee the Lord.

Is there throughout all worlds, one spot,
One lonely wild where thou art not?
The hosts of heaven enjoy thy care,
And those of hell know thou art there.

Awake, asleep, where none intrude,
Or midst the thronging multitude,
In every land, on every sea,

We are surrounded, still, with thee.

Search us, O God, and know each heart, With every idol bid us part;

Make us to keep thy holy ways,

And live to utter forth thy praise.

155

LORD,

ORD, when earthly comforts flee,
Let me find my all in thee.
Then though foes awhile prevail,
Though the vine and fig tree fail,
Still to thee, my God, I'll raise
Grateful songs of love and praise.
Though thou hide thy glorious face,
All is goodness, all is grace.

Though my Father casts me down,
And upon me seems to frown,
Yet if thus he breaks my pride,
Draws me nearer to his side,
Still to him my soul shall raise
Grateful songs of love and praise;
Though he hide his glorious face,
All is goodness, all is grace.

Though he bids the tempest roar,
Though he clouds my prospect o'er,
Takes my sheltering gourd away,
Bids my fondest hopes decay;
Still to him my soul shall raise
Grateful songs of love and praise;
Though he hide his glorious face,
All is goodness, all is grace.

Lord, when this short life is past,
Take me to thy rest at last;
Every sorrow there shall cease,
Lost in love, and joy, and peace;
There to thee, my God, I'll raise
Ceaseless songs of love and praise;
There behold thy glorious face,
All thy goodness, all thy grace.

156

Lord, froward heart:

Make me teachable and mild, Upright, simple, free from art; Make me as a weaned child: From distrust and envy free,

Pleased with all that pleases thee.

What thou shalt to-day provide,
Let me as a child receive;
What to-morrow may betide,
Calmly to thy wisdom leave.
'Tis enough that thou wilt care:
Why should I the burden bear?

157

As a little child relies

On a care beyond his own;
Knows he's neither strong nor wise;
Fears to stir a step alone;
Let me thus with thee abide,
As my Father, Guard, and Guide.
Thus preserved from Satan's wiles,
Safe from dangers, free from fears,
May I live upon thy smiles,
Till the promised hour appears,
When the sons of God shall prove
All their Father's boundless love.

PWARD I lift my eyes;

From God is all my aid;

The God who built the skies,
And earth and nature made:

God is the tower

To which I fly;
His grace is nigh

In every hour.

My feet shall never slide,

And fall in fatal snares,

Since God, my Guard and Guide,

Defends me from my fears;
