6

Gracious Lord, we love this day,
When we hear thy holy word;
When we sing thy praise and pray :
Earth can no such joys afford.
But a better rest remains,

Heavenly Sabbaths, happier days;
Rest from sin, and rest from pains;
Endless joys, and endless praise.

THIS

HIS is the day the Lord hath made,
He calls the hours his own;

Let heaven rejoice, let earth be glad,
And praise surround the throne.

To-day he rose and left the dead,
And Satan's empire fell;
To-day the saints his triumphs spread,
And all his wonders tell.

Hosanna to the anointed King,
To David's holy Son!

Help us, O Lord, descend and bring
Salvation from thy throne.

Blest be the Lord, who comes to men
With messages of grace;

Who comes in God his Father's name
To save our sinful race.

Hosanna in the highest strains

The Church on earth can raise ;
The highest heavens in which he reigns
Shall give him nobler praise.

LORD of the worlds above,

How pleasant and how fair
The dwellings of thy love,
Thy earthly temples are!
To thine abode,

My heart aspires
With warm desires,
To see my God.

O happy souls that pray
Where God appoints to hear!
O happy men that

pay

Their constant service there!

They praise thee still;

And happy they

That love the way

To Zion's hill.

They go from strength to strength,
Through this dark vale of tears,
Till each arrives at length,

Till each in heaven appears:
O glorious seat,

When God our King
Shall thither bring

Our willing feet!

To spend one sacred day

Where God and saints abide,

Affords diviner joy

Than thousand days beside:

Where God resorts,

I love it more
To keep the door

Than shine in courts..

God is our sun and shield,
Our light and our defence;
With gifts his hands are fill'd,
We draw our blessings thence:
He shall bestow

On Jacob's race
Peculiar grace
And glory too.

The Lord his people loves;
His hand no good withholds
From those his heart approves,
From pure and pious souls:
Thrice happy he,

O God of hosts,

Whose spirit trusts
Alone in thee.

10 thy temple I repair;

Lord, I love to worship there,

When within the veil I meet
Christ before the mercy-seat.
While thy glorious praise is sung,
Touch my lips, unloose my tongue,
That my joyful soul may bless
Thee, the Lord, my righteousness.
While the prayers of saints ascend,
God of love, to mine attend;
Hear me, for thy Spirit pleads,
Hear, for Jesus intercedes.

my

While I hearken to thy law,
Fill soul with humble awe,
Till thy gospel bring to me
Life and immortality.

9

While thy ministers proclaim
Peace and pardon in thy name,
Thro' their voice, by faith, may I
Hear thee speaking from the sky.
From thy house when I return,
May my heart within me burn,
And at evening let me say:
I have walk'd with God to-day.

LORD, when we bend before thy throne,

And our confessions pour,

Teach us to feel the sins we own,
And hate what we deplore.
Our contrite spirits pitying see;
True penitence impart;

Then let a healing ray from thee

Beam hope on every heart.

When we disclose our wants in prayer,

May we our wills resign;
Let not a thought our bosoms share,
Which is not wholly thine.

Let faith each meek petition fill,

And waft it to the skies;

And teach our hearts 'tis goodness still,
That grants it or denies.

10

LONG have I sat beneath the sound

Of thy salvation, Lord;

But still how weak my faith is found,
And knowledge of thy word!

11

Oft I frequent thy holy place,
And hear almost in vain;
How small a portion of thy grace
My memory can retain!

How cold and feeble is my love!
How negligent my fear!
How low my hope of joys above!
How few affections there!

Great God! thy sovereign power impart
To give thy word success;
Write thy salvation in my heart,

And make me learn thy grace.

Shew my forgetful feet the way
That leads to joys on high;
There knowledge grows without decay,
And love shall never die.

MY God, and is thy table spread?

And does thy cup with love o'erflow?

Thither be all thy children led,

And let them all its sweetness know.

Hail! sacred feast, which Jesus makes,
Rich banquet of his flesh and blood;
Thrice happy he, who here partakes
That sacred stream, that heavenly food.
Why are these emblems still in vain
Before unwilling hearts display'd?
Was not for you the victim slain?
Are you forbid the children's bread?
