1.

If God his residence remove,
Or but conceal his face.

4. Nor earth, nor all the sky,
Can one delight afford;
No, not one drop of real joy,
Without thy presence, Lord.
7. Thou art the sea of love,

Where all my pleasures roll;
The circle where my passions move,
And centre of my soul.

8. To thee my spirits fly

I

With infinite desire :

And yet how far from thee I lie!
Dear Jesus raise me higher.

Hymn 239. L. M.

THIRST, thou wounded Lamb of God, To wash me in thy cleansing blood; To dwell within thy wounds; then pain Is sweet, and life or death is gain.

2. Take my poor heart, and let it be For ever clos'd to all but thee!

Seal thou my breast, and let me wear That pledge of love for ever there. 3. How blest are they who still abide Close shelter'd in thy bleeding side! Who life and strength from thence derive, And by thee move, and in thee live. 4. What are our works but sin and death, Till thou thy quick'ning Spirit breathe : Thou giv'st the pow'r thy grace to move, O wond'rous grace! O boundless love! 5. How can it be thou heav'nly King, That thou shouldst us to glory bring; Make slaves the partners of thy throne, Deck'd with a never-fading crown ?

6. Hence our hearts melt, our eyes o'erflow, Our words are lost, nor will we know, Nor will we think of aught beside, "My Lord, my love, is crucify'd."

7. Ah! Lord, enlarge our scanty thought,
To know the wonders thou hast wrought;
Unioose our stamm'ring tongues to tell
Thy love immense, unsearchable!

8. First-born of many brethren thou,
To thee, lo! all our souls we bow,
To thee our hearts and hands we give ;
Thine may we die, thine may we live.

COME

Hymn 240. c. M.

OME, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
One God in persons three.

Bring back the heav'nly blessing lost
By all mankind and me.

2. Thy favour, and thy nature too,
To me, to all restore ;

Forgive, and after God renew,
And keep me evermore.

3. Eternal Son of Righteousness,
Display thy beams divine,
And cause the glories of thy face,
Upon my heart to shine.

4. Light in thy light, O may I see,
Thy grace and mercy prove!
Reviv'd and cheer'd, and bless'd by thee,
The God of pard'ning love!

5. Lift up thy countenance serene,
And let thy happy child

Behold, without a cloud between,.
The Godhead reconcil'd.

Till I can all things do,
On thee, Almighty to create,
Almighty to renew.

A self-renouncing will,
That tramples down and casts behind,
The baits of pleasing ill:

A soul inur'd to pain,

To hardship, grief, and loss:
Bold to take up, firm to sustain,

The consecrated cross.

3. I want a godly fear,

A quick discerning eye,

That looks to thee when sin is near,
And sees the tempter fly.

A spirit still prepar'd,

And arm'd with jealous care,
For ever standing on its guard,
And watching unto pray'r.

4. I want a heart to pray,

To pray and never cease,
Never to murmur at thy stay,
Or wish my suff’rings less :
This blessing above all-
Always to pray I want,

Hymn 242. s. M.

HE thing my God doth hate,
That I no more may do,

Thy creature, Lord, again create,
And all my soul renew.
My soul shall then like thine,
Abhor the thing unclean,
And sanctify'd by love divine,
For ever cease from sin.

2. That blessed law of thine,
Jesus, to me impart ;
Thy Spirit's law of life divine,
O write it in my heart!
Implant it deep within,

Whence it may ne'er remove,
The law of liberty from sin,
The perfect law of love.

3. Thy nature be my law,

Thy spotless sanctity,

And sweetly ev'ry moment draw
My happy soul to thee.
Soul of my soul remain,
Who didst for all fulfil,
In me, O Lord, fulfil again'
Thy heav'nly Father's will.

Hymn 243. P. M.

From the German.

HOU hidden love of God, whose height,

Whose depth unfathom'd, no man knows:

I see from far thy beauteous light,

I only sigh for thy repose:
My heart is pain❜d, nor can it be
At rest, till it finds rest in thee.
2. Thy secret voice invites me still,

The sweetness of thy yoke to prove;
And fain I would, but though my will
Seems fix'd, yet wide my passions rove.
Yet hindrances strew all the way:
I aim at thee, yet from thee stray.
3. Tis mercy all, that thou hast brought
My mind to seek her peace in thee;
Yet while I seek and find thee not,

No peace my wand'ring soul shall see.
O when shall all my wand'rings end,
And all my steps to thee-ward tend?
4. Is there a thing beneath the sun,

That strives with thee my heart to share?
Ah! tear it thence, and reign alone,

The Lord of ev'ry motion there!
Then shall my heart from earth be free,
When it hath found repose in thee.
3. Each moment draw, from earth away,
My heart, that lowly waits thy call.
Speak to my inmost soul, and say:
"I am thy love, thy God, thy all!"
To feel thy pow'r, to hear thy voice,
To taste thy love, be all my choice.
