INTRODUCTION.

THE design of the writer in presenting the following pages to the consideration of an enlightened Public, is, to discharge a sacred duty which he owes to himself, his fellow-citizens, and his God. We protest against feeling the least animosity towards Mr. Burchard, or the people of various denominations, who countenance and support him in his artful and well-digested plans for the advancement of his favorite doctrine, viz. old fashioned Calvinism in Vermont, and the adjoining states. There certainly, can be no unkindness in exhibiting a plain, unvarnished statement of facts; accompanied with such remarks, as reason and conscience may dictate; and leave the intelligent reader to judge for himself, according to the merits of the case. No one, who has any regard for honesty and propriety of conduct, in spiritual things, will complain of us for pursuing this course, though it may result in exposing some of those dogmatical absurdities, which have been unsparingly dealt out in this place, within a few weeks past.

Let no one be deterred from "proving all things, and holding fast that which is good," by the puerile hue-and-cry, that the writer is opposed to the work of the Holy Spirit, and would publish a book to bring it into disrepute! Reader, it is too late in the day, we hope, for men or women of common sense, to be intimidated by such groundless witchstories. Suffer me to converse with you now familiarly, as I would at your elbow; and inquire of you, soberly and candidly, whether you believe that I would, intentionally, oppose and ridicule the work of the Holy Ghost? Tell me, friend, have you ever learned by my discourses or writings, that I meant to discard or even make light of the real doings of the Spirit of God? You know that my Bible, as well as yours, gives most indubitable evidence of the efficacy of the Spirit of God, in the conversion and salvation of sinners. With all true christians, at least, these are undeniable facts. Well, now comes the main question-Did you ever suspect that the writer of this sacred appeal, was disposed to ridicule the works of the Holy Ghost, as recorded in the
