THIRD EDITION.

A

S it has become necessary to issue a Third Edition of these Mission Sermons, I have taken the opportunity of revising the volume throughout. I am now, for the first time, personally responsible for its contents, and I hope that they represent more accurately than heretofore the thoughts which were present to my mind, and to which I endeavoured to give utterance during that Mission.

Few extempore preachers deliver themselves of their thoughts with such perfect accuracy of expression, that justice would be done to their discourses by the exact and verbatim reproduction in print of all that they may say; and I certainly do not belong to that gifted minority.

Much, too, in an extempore address, will always be rendered intelligible at the time by the manner, tone and gesture of the speaker, which will appear feeble and vapid, if not actually obscure, when the bare words alone are repeated.

Further, no stenographer, however accomplished (and Mr. Verrall's ability in this respect needs no testimony from me), can make sure of reproducing exactly the words
