3 Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease:
"Tis music in the sinner's ears,
"Tis life, and health, and peace.

4 He breaks the power of reigning sin,
He sets the prisoner free;

His blood can make the foulest clean;
His blood availed for me.

5 Look unto Him, ye nations; own
Your God, ye fallen race;
Look, and be saved by faith alone,
Be justified by grace.

264 Heb iv. 14-16.

7.7.7.5.

ORD of mercy and of might,
Of mankind the life and light,
Maker, Teacher, Infinite!

Jesus, hear and save!

2 Strong Creator, Saviour mild,
Humbled to a mortal child,
Captive, beaten, bound, reviled !
Jesus, hear and save!

3 Throned above celestial things,
Borne aloft on angels' wings,
Lord of lords, and King of kings!
Jesus, hear and save!

4 Soon to come to earth again,
Judge of angels and of men!
Hear us now, and hear us then!
Jesus, hear and save!

Matt. viii. 25.

HEBER

8.8.8.6.

O, the storms of life are breaking,
Faithless fears our hearts are shaking,

For our succour undertaking,

Lord and Saviour, help us.

2 Lo, the world from Thee rebelling, Round Thy church in pride is swelling: With Thy word their madness quelling, Lord and Saviour, help us.

3 On Thine own command relying, We our onward task are plying; Unto Thee for safety sighing,

Lord and Saviour, help us.

4 By Thy birth, Thy cross, and passion,
By Thy tears of deep compassion,
By Thy mighty intercession,
Lord and Saviour, help us.

HIS PRE-EXISTENCE.

the blue heavens were stretch'd

ERE abroad,

From everlasting was the Word;

With God He was; the Word was God,
And must divinely be adored.

2 By His own power were all things made;
By Him supported all things stand
He is the whole creation's Head,
And angels fly at His command.

3 Ere sin was born, or Satan fell,
He led the host of morning stars:
Thy generation who can tell,

Or count the number of Thy years?

4 But lo! He leaves those heavenly forms, The Word descends and dwells in clay, That He may hold converse with worms, Cloth'd in such feeble flesh as they.

5 Mortals with joy beheld His face,
The Eternal Father's only Son;
How full of truth! how full of grace!
When through His eyes the Godhead shone.
6 Archangels leave their high abode,
To learn new mysteries here, and tell
The love of our descending God,
The glories of Immanuel.

Prov. viii.

S. M.

WATTS.

heard?

HALL wisdom cry aloud,

The voice of God's eternal word,

Deserves it no regard?

I was His chief delight,

His everlasting Son,

Before the first of all His works,

Creation, was begun.

Before the flying clouds,

Before the solid land,

Before the fields, before the floods,
I dwelt at His right hand.

When He adorn'd the skies,
And built them, I was there,

To order when the sun should rise,
And marshal every star.

When He pour'd out the sea,
And spread the flowing deep,

I gave the flood a firm decree
In its own bounds to keep.

Upon the empty air

The earth was balanced well;

With joy I saw the mansion where
The sons of men should dwell.

7 My busy thoughts at first On their salvation ran,

8

Ere sin was born, or Adam's dust
Was fashion'd to a man.

Then come, receive My grace,

Ye children, and be wise;

Happy the man that keeps My ways;
The man that shuns them dies.

HIS ADVENT.

MEDLEY.

MORTALS, awake, with angels join,

And chant the pleasing lay;

Joy, love, and gratitude combine,
To hail the auspicious day.

2 In heaven the rapturous song began,
And sweet seraphic fire

Through all the shining legions ran,
And strung and tun'd the lyre.

3 Swift through the vast expanse it flew,
And loud the echo roll'd;

The theme, the song, the joy was new,
"Twas more than heaven could hold:
4 Down, through the portals of the sky,
The impetuous torrent ran :
And angels with compassion fly,
To bear the news to man.

5 Hark! the celestial armies shout,
And glory leads the song:
Good-will and peace are heard throughout
The harmonious, heavenly throng.

6 With joy the chorus we'll repeat,
Glory to God on high!

Good will and peace are now complete; Jesus was born to die.

7 Hail! Prince of Life, for ever hail ! Redeemer, Brother, Friend!

Though earth, and time, and life shall fail, Thy praise shall never end.

CAWOOD.

HARR! what mean those holy voices,

Sweetly sounding through the skies?

Lo! the angelic host rejoices,

Heavenly hallelujahs rise.

Listen to the wondrous story,

Which they chant in hymns of joy;
Glory in the highest, glory!

Glory be to God Most High!

2 Peace on earth, good will from heaven,
Reaching far as man is found,-
Souls redeem'd and sins forgiven ;-
Loud our golden harps shall sound.
Christ is born, the great Anointed;
Heaven and earth His praises sing;
O receive whom God appointed,

For your Prophet, Priest, and King. 3 Hasten, mortals, to adore Him;

Learn His name and taste His joy;
Till in heaven ye sing before Him,
Glory be to God Most High!
Sons of men, repeat the story,
Sing the gladness of His birth;
Spread the brightness of His glory,
Till it cover all the earth.

C. WESLEY.

ARK! the herald angels sing:

HA

Glory to the new-born King!
Glory in the highest heaven,
Peace on earth, and man forgiven.
