HIS CHRISTIAN CHARACTER.

589 Titus ii. 11, 12.

1

L. M.

WATTS.

YO let our lips and lives express
The holy gospel we profess;

So let our works and virtues shine,
To prove the doctrine all divine.

2 Thus shall we best proclaim abroad
The honours of our Saviour God,
When the salvation reigns within,
And grace subdues the power of sin.
3 Our flesh and sense must be denied,
Passion and envy, lust and pride;
While justice, temperance, truth, and love,
Our inward piety approve.

4 Religion bears our spirits up,
While we expect that blessed hope,
The bright appearance of the Lord,
And faith stands leaning on His word.

Prov. xxiii. 17. C. M. DODDRIDGE HRICE happy souls, who, born from heaven,

THRIC

While yet they sojourn here,

Thus all their days with God begin,
And spend them in His fear.

2 'Midst hourly cares may love present
Its incense to Thy throne;

And, while the world our hands employs,
Our hearts be Thine alone.

3 As sanctified to noblest ends
Be each refreshment sought,
And by each various Providence
Some wise instruction brought.

4 When to laborious duties called,
Or by temptations tried,
We'll seek the shelter of Thy wings,
And in Thy strength confide.

5 As different scenes of life arise,
Our grateful hearts would be
With Thee, amidst the social band,
In solitude with Thee.

6 In solid, pure delights, like these,
Let all my days be passed;
Nor shall I then impatient wish,
Nor shall I fear, the last.

1Hoore Thy least commandment

TOLY Lord God, I love Thy truth,

slight;

Yet pierced by sin, the serpent's tooth,
I mourn the anguish of the bite.
2 But, though the poison lurks within,
Hope bids me still with patience wait,
Till death shall set me free from sin,
Free from the only thing I hate.

3 Had I a throne above the rest,
Where angels and archangels dwell,
One sin unslain within my breast
Would make that heaven as dark as hell.

4 The prisoner sent to breathe fresh air,
And bless'd with liberty again,

Would mourn, were he condemned to wear One link of all his former chain.

5 But oh! no foe invades the bliss,

When glory crowns the Christian's head: One view of Jesus as He is,

Will strike all sin for ever dead.

Psalm cxlv. 1-13. SCHEFFLER, Translated by J.WESLEY. HEE will I love, my strength, my tower; Thee will I love, my joy, my crown; Thee will I love, with all my power, In all Thy works, and Thee alone; Thee will I love, till the pure fire Fills my whole soul with chaste desire. 2 I thank Thee, uncreated Sun,

That Thy bright beams on me have shined; I thank Thee, who hast overthrown My foes, and healed my wounded mind; I thank Thee, whose enlivening voice Bids my freed heart in Thee rejoice. 3 Uphold me in the doubtful race, Nor suffer me again to stray; Strengthen my feet with steady pace Still to press forward in Thy way; My soul and flesh, O Lord of might, Fill, satiate, with Thy heavenly light. 4 Give to mine eyes refreshing tears; Give to my heart chaste, hallowed fires; Give to my soul, with filial fears,

The love that all heaven's host inspires;
That all my powers, with all their might,
In Thy sole glory may unite.

5 Thee will I love, my joy, my crown;
Thee will I love, my Lord, my God;
Thee will I love, beneath Thy frown
Or smile,-Thy seeptre or Thy rod:
What though my flesh and heart decay,
Thee shall I love in endless day.

Heb. xi. 24-26. C. M.

WATTS.

THEN in the light of faith divine
We look on things below,

Honour, and gold, and sensual joy,
How vain and dangerous too!

2 God is mine all-sufficient good,
My portion and my choice;
In Him my vast desires are fill'd,
And all my powers rejoice.
3 In vain the world accosts my ear,
And tempts my heart anew;
I cannot buy your bliss so dear,
Nor part with heaven for you.

servants of the Lord,

YEach in his office wait,

Observant of His heavenly word,
And watchful at His gate.

Let all your lamps be bright,

And trim the golden flame;

Gird up your loins, as in His sight,
For awful is His name.

Watch;-'tis your Lord's command;
And while we speak, He's near.
Mark the first signal of His hand,
And ready all appear.

O happy servant he,

In such a posture found!

He shall his Lord with rapture see,
And be with honour crowned.

Christ shall the banquet spread
With His own royal hand,

And raise that favourite servant's head

Amidst the angelic band.

AWAKE, my zeal, awake, my love,

To serve my Saviour, here below, In works which perfect saints above And holy angels cannot do.

2 Subdue thy passions, O my soul,
Maintain the fight, thy work pursue,
Daily thy rising sins control,
And be thy victories ever new.

3 The land of triumph lies on high,
There are no foes to encounter there;
Lord, I would conquer till I die,
And finish all the glorious war.

4 Let every flying hour confess
I gain Thy gospel fresh renown;
And when my life and labours cease,
May I possess the promised crown.

596 Heb. xii. 1, 2. C. M. DODDRIDGE 1A WAKE, my soul, stretch every nerve,

press with vigour on;

A heavenly race demands thy zeal,
And an immortal crown.

2 A cloud of witnesses around
Hold thee in full survey;
Forget the steps already trod,
And onward urge thy way.

3 "Tis God's all-animating voice,

That calls thee from on high:
"Tis His own hand presents the prize
To thine aspiring eye ;-

4 That prize with peerless glories bright,
Which shall new lustre boast,

When victors' wreaths and monarchs' gems
Shall blend in common dust.

5 Blest Saviour, introduced by Thee,
Have I my race begun ;

And, crowned with victory, at Thy feet
I'll lay my honours down.
