44 Q Was there any confiderable Thing fell out in the Reign of Pekah? A. This Pekah joined with the King of Syria to invade Judah, but he was repulfed In his days Tiglath-Pilefer, King of Affyria, took many Cities in Galilee, and carried many of the People captive to Affyria. 2 Kings xiv. 29. and xvi. 15, &c.

45 Q. Who was Hofhea, and what is recorded of him? A. He was the laft King of Ifrael; he New Pekah, and made himself King. 2 Kings XV. 30.

46 Q. How came the Kingdom to end in him? A. In his days Shalmanefer, King of Affyria, took the City Samaria, bound Hofhea the King in Prifon, carried Multitudes of Ifrael captive into Affyria, and diftributed them into feveral diftant Countries, from which they have never returned to this day. 2 Kings xvii. 1-6.

47 Q. What provoked Shalmanefer to do this? A. Hofbea had fubmitted to him, and afterwards plotted and rebelled against him. ver. 3, 4.

48 Q. What provoked God to punish Ifrael thus ? A. The People of Ifrael, with all their Kings after their Separation from the Houfe of David, had been guilty of continual Idolatry, in oppofition to the many Precepts and Warnings of God, by the Writings of Mofes, and the Voice of all the Prophets. ver. 7-23.

49 Q. What became of Samaria, and the other Cities of Ifrael, when the People were driven out of them? A. Several of the Heathen Nations were placed there, and each worfhipped their own. Gods and Idols: wherefore the Lord fent Lions amongft

amongst them, and deftroyed feveral of them. ver. 24-31.

50 Q. What was done upon this Occafion to appeafe the Anger of God, aud fave the People from the Lions? A. The King of Affyria fent a Jewish Prieft thither, to teach them the Worship of the God of Ifrael. ver. 27.

51Q. What was the Effect of this Conduct of the King of Affyria? A. Thefe Nations feared the God of Ifrael, and yet they could not lay afide their own Idolatries, for they continued to ferve their own graven Images alfo in many fol. lowing Generations. ver. 4!.

52 Q But did they always continue in this mixed kind of Religion? A. In Process of Time they forfook their Idols, worshipped the true God only, and fubmitted themselves to the Jewish Religion, fo as to receive the five Books of Mofes : They had a Temple of their own built on Mount Gerizim, and in the New Teftament are called Samaritans.

CHA P. XII.

Of the Kings of JUDAH.

10. How many Kings or Rulers reigned over Judah? A. Twenty, (viz.) Rehoboam, Abijah, Afa, Jehofaphat, Fehoram, Ahaziah, Athaliah the Queen, Foah, Amafiah, Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manaffeh, Ammon, Jofiah, Jebaabaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah.

2 Q. Were all thefe Rulers of Judah also great Sinners as well as the Kings of Ifrael? A. A few of them were very religious, fome very wicked, and others of an indifferent or mixed Character.

3 Q. What fell out in Rehoboam's Reign after the ten Tribes had made Jeroboam their King ? A. When Rehobam raifed a great Army out of Judah and Benjamin to recover the Ten Tribes, God by his Prophet forbid them to proceed. 1 Kings xii. 22-25.

4 Q. Were there no Wars then between Judah and Ifrael? A. Yes, in the following Times there were bloody Wars between them.

5 Q. How did the People of Judah behave themJelves under the Government of Rehoboam? A. They fell into Idolatry and shameful Sins, whereupon God was angry, and Shishack King of Egypt plundered the Temple, and the King's Houfe of their Treasures, in the fifth Year of Rehoboam's Reign 1 Kings xiv. 25. So fhort-lived was the fu preme Grandeur and Glory of the Jewish Church

and State.

6 Q. Did Abijah, the Son of Rehoboam, do any thing remarkable in his Reign? A. He made a Speech, and pleaded against Ifrael, when Jeroboam led them to war againft him; he reproved them for their Departure from the true Worfhip of God, and from the Houfe of David: and when they would not hearken, but fet upon him in Battle, he and his Army cryed unto the Lord, and fhouted, and flew five hundred thoufand Men. A Brave Example, and Divine Succefs! 2 Chron. xiii.

7Q. What is recorded concerning Ala, the Son of Abijah, and King of Judah? A. That he did what was right in the Eyes of the Lord, and destroyed

deftroyed the Idols which had been fet up in the Land 2 Chron. xiv. 1—5.

8 Q. What Token of Favour did God fhew him? A. When he called upon the Lord, and trufted in him, he defeated the Army of the Ethiopians who came against him, though they were a thoufand thoufand. ver. 9-15:

9 Q. Did Ala continue all his days to fear the Lord? A. In his old Age he fell into diftruft of God, and he gave the Treasure that remained in the Houfe of God, and in the King's Houfe, to the King of Syria, to guard and help him against Baafha the King of Ifrael; and he imprifoned the Prophet which reproved him for it. 2 Chron. xvi. J-10.

10 Q. What is remarkable in Ala's Death? A. That in the Disease of his Feet (which is fuppofed to be the Gout) he fought not the Lord, but only to the Phyficians; and he flept with his Fathers, ver. 11-13.

11 Q. How did his Son Jehoshaphat behave himJelf in the Kingdom? A. He walked in the first and beft ways of his Father David, and God was with him. 2 Chron. xvii. 3.

14 Q. Wherein did he offend God? A. In joining in Alliance with Ahab the wicked King of Ifrael, whereby he was in great danger of being fain in a Battle against the Syrians. 2 Chron. xviii. I, 31. and xix. 2.

He proclaimed a Faft through the Land, and in the midft of the People he prayed earneftly to the Lord, and when he went out to Battle, he appointed the Singers before the Army, to fing Praises to the Lord. 16 Q. What was the Effect of this pious Practice? A. When they began to fing and to pray, his Enemies fell upon one another till they were all flain. ver. 22-29.

17 Q. Did Jehoram, the Son of Jehoshaphat, imitate his Father's Government in Piety ? A. By no means; for he flew all his own Brethren, he walked in the ways of Ahab King of Ifrael, and took his Daughter Athaliah to Wife. 2 Chron. xxi.

18 Q. How did God teftify his Difplcafure against Jehoram? A. He fmote Jehoram with fuch an incurable Diftemper, that his Bowels fell out, and he died of fore Difeafes. ver. 15-19.

19 Q. Who fucceeded Jehoram in the Kingdom? A. Ahaziah his youngest Son, for all his eldest were flain in the Camp by the Arabians. 2 Chron. xxi. I.
