on to fhew how Christ made himself a perfect and effectual Sacrifice, inftead of all the imperfect Sacrifices under the Law.

2. His being chofen out of the Jewish Nation to be the Saviour and the King of Ifrael, is foretold under the Emblem of David, Pfal. Ixxxix. 18, &c. Then thou fpakeft in Vifion to thy Holy One, and jaidft, I have laid help upon one that is mighty: I have exalted one chofen out of the People I will make him my First-born, higher than the Kings of the Earth, &c. Chrift is called the Firstborn of the Creation, and King of Kings, Col. i. Rev. xix.

3. The Children in the Temple finging his Triumph when he entered into Jerufalem is early intimated, Pfal. viii. 2. Out of the Mouth of Babes and Sucklings thou haft ordained Strength, or perfected Praife; and in Pfal. cxviii. 25, 26. you have the very Words of their Song. Save now,' I beseech thee; (which in the Hebrew is Hofannah:) O Lord; bleffed be he that cometh in the Name of the Lord: which is applied to Chrift, Matth. xxi. 9. And as the Scribes and Pharifees raged and had Indignation against him on this Account, fo this very Rage is intimated in the fame viiith Pfalm, ver. 2. The Babes and Sucklings cried out, and did ftill or filence the Enemy and the Avenger, i. e. the revengeful Enemy, ver. 2. And this is further hinted in the cxviiith Pfalm, ver. 22. where David calls Chrift, the Stone which the Builders refused, and which is become the Head-Stone of the Corner: The Teachers and Rulers, or the Jews, who fhould have been the Builders of the Church, rejected Chrift, and on this Occafion he applies thefe Words to himself, Mat. xxi. 42. and they are applied to him by the Apoftles Paul and Peter,

Eph. ii. 20. Jefus Chrift himself being the chief Corner-Stone; and 1 Pet. i. 7. The Stone which the Builders difallowed is made the Head of the Corner.

4. His Perfecution by Princes and People is declared in Pfal. ii. 1. Why do the Heathen rage, and the People imagine a vain thing? The Kings of the Earth fet themselves, and the Rulers take Counsel together against the Lord, and against his Anointed, i. e. against his Meffiah or Chrift; which was cited and fulfilled, Acts iv. 26, 27. when Herod and Pontius Pilate, and the People, both Gentiles and Jews, all rofe up against Jefus of Nazareth, and put him to death.

5. His bitter Reproaches and Suffering, and the Manner of his Death is foretold by David in the xxiid and lxixth Pfalms. In the Beginning of the xxiid Pfalm, David by way of Emblem in Prophecy, fpeaks the Words of Chrift upon the Crofs, My God, my God, why hast thou forfaken me? ver. 16, 18. They pierced my Hands and my Feet: They parted my Garments among them, and caft Lots upon my Vefture: And that he was brought down to the Duft of Death, ver. 15. All thefe Things were fulfilled when they nailed his Hands and Feet to a Crofs, when they caft Lots for his Garments, and flew him, Matth. xxvii. 35, 46. John xix. 23, 24.

His Reproaches and his cruel Treatment are defcribed farther, Pfal. Ixix. 20, 21. Reproach hath broken my Heart, I am full of Heaviness: They gave me alfo Gall for my Meat, in my Thirst they gave me Vinegar to drink, Matth. xxvii. 48.

6. His Refurrection from the Dead, Pfal. xvi. 10. For thou wilt not leave my Soul in Hell, i. e. in the State of the Dead, neither wilt thou suffer

thine boly One to fee Corruption: i. e. to lie l enough n the Grave to be fubject to Rottenneis: Thou wilt fhew me the Path of Life. Now this was evidently fulfilled in Christ at his rifing from the Dead to Life again before he had lain there three complete Days, As ii. 31. and xiii. 33-38. 1 Cor. xv. 4.

7. His Afcenfion to Heaven attended with Angels, his Triumph over the Devils, his receiving Gifts from the Father, and his Diftribution of them to Men, are foretold in Pfal. lxviii. 17, 18. The Chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of Angels the Lord is among them. Thou haft afcended on high, thou haft led Captivity captive, thou haft received Gifts for Men; yea, for the rebellious alfo, that the Lord God might dwell among them. Which Words are applied to our Saviour being afcended to Heaven, and having led the Devils captive, and beftowed Gifts on Men, (viz.) Prophets, Apoftles, &c. for the Miniftry of the Gospel, that God might dwell among Men who before were rebellious against him, Eph. iv. 8. See alfo Col. ii. 15. he spoiled Principalities and Powers, and triumphed over them.

8. His Exaltation to the Kingdom at God's Right-hand, and to the Priesthood of Interceffion, is defcribed particularly, Pfal. cx. 1, 4. The Lord faid unto my Lord, Sit thou at my Right-hand till 1 make thy Enemies thy Footstool: And thou art a Prieft for ever after the Order of Melchifedeck; which Expreffions are applied to Chrift, Matth. xxii. 42, 44. Acts ii. 33, 34, &c. Heb. v. 6. and vii. 2, 3, 17. where Chrift is exalted to be a King and a Prieft as Melchifedeck was, and that too, a Priest of conftant Interceffion or Pleading with

God for Men, and bleffing them as Melchifedeck bleffed Abraham.

9. The Character of this King is described in feveral Pfalms, as in Pfal. xlv. 6, 7. Thy Throne, O God, is for ever and ever; the Sceptre of thy Kingdom is a right Sceptre: Thou loveft Righteousness, and bateft Wickedness; therefore God, thy God hath anointed thee with the Oil of Gladness above thy Fellows: Which is a plain Description of Jefus Chrift, Heb. i. 8, 9. whom God anointed with the Holy Ghoft and with Power, As x. 38. and who had the Holy Spirit without Meafure, John iii. 34. And yet further, in Pfalm lxxii. is a large Character of Chrift under the Emblem of Solomon: And Pfalm lxxxix. defcribes Chrift under the Character of David himself.

10. In the fecond Pfalm, his Refurrection and Exaltation are defcribed under the diftinct and peculiar Character of the Son of God: ver. 6, 7. I have fet my King upon my holy Hill Sion: and I will declare the Decree, Thou art my Son, this Day bave I begotten thee: Which is cited to prove the Refurrection and Advancement of Christ to the Throne by the Power of the Father, and as the Image of the Father; He was first the King of Zion or Ifrael, as God is King of his Church, Acts xiii. 33. Heb. v. 5. and he is now alfo Lord of the Heathen, and King of all Nations, as God is King or Ruler of all the World. The 8th Verfe particularly declares the Submiffion of the Heathens to Chrift after he begun his Work of Interceffion in Heaven. Afk of me, and I fhall give thee the Heathen for thine Inheritance, and the uttermoft Part of the Earth for thy Poffeffion. The next Words also, (viz.) thou shalt break them with a Rod of Iron, and dash them in pieces like a Pot

Note 1. In fome of these Pfalms we should not have known Chrift or the Meffiah was intended, if Chrift himself or the Apostles had not cited them for this Purpofe; yet fome of them are so evident, that the ancient Jews applyed them to the Messiah, and we cannot but apply them to him, because they could not be applyed to David, or to any other Perfon.

Note 2. There might be alfo many other Texts cited out of the Book of Pfalms, which are interpreted concerning Jefus Chrift in the New Teftament, which we fhould not otherwise have known to belong to him; as Pfal. xcvii. 7. Worship him all ye Gods; which is applyed to him in Heb. i. 6. Let all the Angels of God worship him, who in Scripture are sometimes called Gods. So Pfal. cii. 25, 26, 27. are applyed in the fame Chapter to Chrift, and fhew us that the World was created by him, Thou Lord, in the Beginning haft laid the Foundations of the Earth, and the Heavens are the Works of thy Hands, &c. In both which Texts, as well as in feveral others, the very fame Names, Characters, and Actions which are attributed to Jehovah, the God of the Jews, the only true God, in the Old Testament, are applyed to Jefus Chrift in the New; which plainly advances his Character fo high, as to affure us, that he is one with the Father, that he is God manifefted in the Flesh, whofe Name is Emmanuel, or God with us, as we fhall learn immediately from Ifaiah the Prophet.

13 Q. We have heard various and exprefs Prophecies which David gave concerning the Meffiah, and did not Solomon alfo prophecy of Chrift? A. Many Chriftians, in elder and later Times, have supposed that the eighth Chapter of Solomon's Pro
