Prospectus.

Encyclopædists, with other writers of dictionaries, have been placed by high authority among the pioneers of literature,' a species of auxiliaries peculiarly necessary when science is on the advance. It is theirs to remove the obstacles which impede her progress in penetrating unexplored regions; and if they share not in the splendour, they secure the permanence of her

victories.

When science in any country becomes stationary, and reposes amongst privileged orders of men, in colleges and cloisters, Encyclopædias either do not exist, or fall into desuetude. It is when the thinking faculty of a nation is roused, and its institutions are favourable to the diffusion of knowledge, that the sphere of such works is created; that their importance to the_best interests of society becomes acknowledged; and that, from their adaptedness to meet the intellectual craving thus excited, they are eagerly sought for, and promptly supplied.

The literary history of Great Britain, in a very striking manner, illustrates the truth of these remarks. The first Cyclopædia that appeared amongst es though almost resembling the original chaos, and scarcely exhibiting even "The baby figure of the giant mass Of things,"

marked the commencement of a new æra, and opened to the rapidly increasing numbers of our reading population the richest stores of intellectual wealth. This was followed, at various intervals, by others more erudite and compre hensive; each professing to offer greater advantages than its predecessor, and asserting a stronger claim to public patronage. In the present day there are no fewer than six principal Encyclopædias, diversified in their specific character and object, and of very different gradations in the scale of merit; yet are they all valuable accessions to our literature. They have united to enlarge the circle of knowledge, and to extend its benefits to great multitudes, who would otherwise have remained in comparative ignorance.

The duty which, on the present occasion, especially devolves upon the Editors of this work, and to which they would strictly confine themselves is. to shew that there is ground yet unoccupied, and of very large dimensions, which requires to be cultivated by the introduction of another Encyclopædia;

OF

USEFUL KNOWLEDGE,

OR

A SERIES OF ELEMENTARY TREATISES

UPON THE VARIOUS BRANCHES OF

PHILOSOPHY, HISTORY, AND ART.

The want of ELEMENTARY TREATISES for instructing all classes of the community in the various branches of knowledge, particularly in the SCIENCES and the ARTS connected with them, having been long experienc ed by the friends of general education, the COMMITTEE for the DIFFUSION of USEFUL KNOWLEDGE have adopted such measures as appeared best calculated to supply this defect; and with this view Messrs. LONGMAN, REES, ORME, and Co. will, under their sanction and superintendence, begin the publication of a SERIES of TREATISES on the 15th of February 1827.

1. Each Scientific Treatise will contain an Exposition of the Fundamental Principles of some Branch of Science, their proofs and illustrations, their application to practical uses, and to the explanation of facts or appearances.

2. For this purpose, the greater Divisions of Knowledge will be subdivided into Branches; and if one of these Subdivisions or Branches cannot be sufficiently taught in a single Treatise, it will be continued in

a second.

3, When any part of a Subdivision is of a sufficient practical importance to require being minutely pursued in its details, an extra or separate Treatise upon this part will be given without interrupting the Series; and care will be taken, as far as possible, to publish those Treatises first that handle subjects the knowledge of which is necessary for understanding those which follow.

4. Thus the great division of Natural Knowledge, commonly called Natural Philosophy, will be subdivided into different Branches,—as Elementary Astronomy-Mechanical Powers-Application of these

2

to Machinery-Hydrostatics-Hydraulics-Pneumatics— Optics— Electricity-Magnetism. Separate Practical Treatises will be given on Dialling-Millwork-Optical Instruments; and Treatises en Geometry, Algebra, and Trigonometry, will be published before extending Natural Philosophy to its higher branches, of Dynamics, Hydrodynamics, and Physical Astronomy,-it being the object of this publication to enable persons who may not have the assistance of experienced Teachers, or may prefer learning by themselves, to acquire step by step the whole of any department of Science which interest or inclination may lead them to study.

5. To each Treatise will be subjoined a reference to the works or parts of

works in which the same subject is handled more at large, with suggestions for enabling the student, who may feel so disposed, to pro. secute his studies farther,

6. Each Treatise will consist of about thirty-two pages Octavo, printed so as to contain above one hundred ordinary octavo pages, with neat Engravings on Wood, and Tables. It will be sold for sixpence ; and two will appear every Month-on the First and Fifteenth. Reading Societies, Mechanics Institutions, and Education Committees in the Country, will be furnished with supplies at a liberal Discount. 7. The First Treatise on ELEMENTARY ASTRONOMY, will be published on the First of February; and there will be given gratis, on that day, an Introductory Discourse upon the Advantages and Pleasures derived from the pursuits of Science.-The following are among the subjects which will be taught in the course of the first Eighteen Months. The extra Treatises are marked".

de Wienna, An. Dm. MCCCCLXVIII,
Much discussion has arisen amongst the various
bibliographers, whether the latter work in the
present volume was printed separately, or with
the other works: at the first view, it would ap-
pear, that they were all printed at the same time,
the date and the name of the printer only appear
ing in the latter; certainly they were all printed
with the same type, but with only one material
difference, viz. the former pieces have thirty-two
lines in a full page, and the latter thirty-five.-4
fine tall copy, in morocco, gill leaves, and ex-
tremely rare.

CRONECKEN DER SASSEN, 11. 11s.

Geprint Peter Schoffer van Gernsheim,

1499.

Commences by the creation of Eve, who is rising out of Adam's back, and continued by a series of many hundred woodcuts, with short descriptions in German: those of the Battles are very spirited; many are curious and whimsical. The Portraits of renowned men are accompanied by their Arms. The work is extremely rare-probably not more than one other copy in this country-in fine preservation, in the original oak boards.
