Dictation. The sponge is first a small yellow egg. It
moves about in the water. Soon it fastens itself to a hard surface. Its food is the minute animals found in the water. The small holes on the side of the sponge are mouths. Little tubes lead from the
mouths through the sponge.
Name ten objects seen in the picture. Write a story about getting sponges.
Dictation.Divers go to the bed of the sea to tear the sponge from the rocks. It is very difficult work. Before the

62—King Frederick and the Little Girl
King Frederick, of Prussia, once visited a country school to see how well the children knew their lessons. Taking up an orange, he said: “To what kingdom does this belong ?” “To the vegetable kingdom, sire,” said a little girl. to what kingdom does this belong ?” said he, holding up a golden coin.
“To the mineral kingdom,” she replied. “And to what kingdom do I belong, my child ?" asked the king. The little girl did not think it could be right to say the animal kingdom, so, looking up, she said, “To the kingdom of heaven."
To the Teacher.-Have the story read aloud. Write these topics on the board : The king; the school ; the little girl ; the first question ; the an. swer; the second question; the answer; the third question; the answer. Let the pupils tell the story, orally, following the topics; and then write it.

Dictation.—The potato was found first in South America. We eat a stem that has grown under the ground. The potato used the stem as a storehouse for its food. Next to the grains, it is the most useful plant for the food of man.
