1David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he 5 reigned forty years. In Hebron

he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and 6 Judah. And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in 7 hither. Nevertheless David took

the strong hold of Zion: the same 8 is the city of David. And David said on that day, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites, let him get up to the watercourse, and smite the lame and the blind, *that are hated of David's soul. Wherefore they say, "There are the blind and the lame; he can9 not come into the house.

And when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down 18 to the hold. Now the Philistines had come and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. 19 And David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will certainly deliver the 20 Philistines into thine hand. And

And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David: and David heard of it, and went out 1against them. Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the valley of 1o Rephaim. And David inquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver II them into thine hand. So they came up to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there; and David said, God hath broken mine enemies by mine hand, like the breach of waters. Therefore they called the name of that 12 place Baal-perazim. And they left their gods there; and David gave commandment, and they were burned with fire.

the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then is the LORD gone out before thee to smite the host of the 25 Philistines. And David did so, as the LORD commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gezer.

6 And David again gathered together all the chosen men of 2 Israel, thirty thousand. And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him, from Baale Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, 'which is called by the Name, even the name of the LORD of hosts that sitteth upon the che3 rubim. And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in the hill:

the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle for God is gone out before thee to smite the host of the 16 Philistines. And David did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines 17 from Gibeon even to Gezer. And the fame of David went out into ✓all lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him upon all nations.

And David consulted with the captains of thousands and of hundreds, even with every leader. 2 And David said unto all the assembly of Israel, If it seem good unto you, and if it be of the LORD our God, let us send abroad every where unto our brethren that are left in all the 1land of Israel, with whom the priests and Levites are in their cities that have suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto 3 us and let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we sought not unto it in the days of 4 Saul. And all the assembly said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all 5 the people. So David assembled all Israel together, from Shihor the brook of Egypt even unto the entering in of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath6 jearim. And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, the LORD that 'sitteth upon the cherubim, 5 which is called by the Name. 7 And they carried the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it

out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio drave the 8 cart. And David and all Israel played before God with all their might even with songs, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cym9 bals, and with trumpets. And when they came unto the threshing-floor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the 10 oxen 'stumbled. And the anger

and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart. 4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was in 'the hill, with the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark. 5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD with all manner of instruments made of fir wood, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with castanets, ✅1 6 and with cymbals. And when they came to the threshing-floor of Nacon, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen 7 *stumbled. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his 'error; and there he died 8 by the ark of God. And David was displeased, because the LORD had broken forth upon Uzzah: and he called that place "Perez9 uzzah, unto this day. And David was afraid of the LORD that day; and he said, How shall the ark of the LORD come unto me? IO SO David would not remove the

ark of the LORD unto him into the city of David; but David carried it aside into the house of II Obed-edom the Gittite. And the

of the LORD was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put forth his hand to the ark: and there he died before God. II And David was displeased, be

cause the LORD had broken forth upon Uzza: and he called that place Perez-uzza, unto this 12 day. And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to 13 me? So David removed not the ark unto him into the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Git14 tite. And the ark of God remained with the family of Obededom in his house three months: and the LORD blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had.

15 And David made him houses in the city of David; and he prepared 2 a place for the ark of God, and pitched for it a tent. Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto 3 him for ever. And David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the LORD unto its place, which he had prepared for it. 4, 5 And David gathered together the sons of Aaron, and the Levites: of the sons of Kohath; Uriel the chief, and his brethren an hundred and 6 twenty: of the sons of Merari; Asaiah the chief, and his brethren two 7 hundred and twenty: of the sons of Gershom; Joel the chief, and his 8 brethren an hundred and thirty: of the sons of Elizaphan; Shemaiah 9 the chief, and his brethren two hundred of the sons of Hebron; 10 Eliel the chief, and his brethren fourscore: of the sons of Uzziel; II Amminadab the chief, and his brethren an hundred and twelve. And

:

David called for Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, 12 for Uriel, Asaiah, and Joel, Shemaiah, and Eliel, and Amminadab, and said unto them, Ye are the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites : sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, unto the place that I have 13 prepared for it. For because ye bare it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not according 14 to the ordinance. So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves 15 to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel. And the children

of the Levites bare the ark of God upon their shoulders with the staves thereon, as Moses commanded according to the word of the Lord. 16 And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren the singers, with instruments of music, psalteries and harps and cymbals, 17 sounding aloud and lifting up the voice with joy. So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and of his brethren, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari their brethren, Ethan the 18 son of Kushaiah; and with them their brethren of the second degree, Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, 19 and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, the doorkeepers. So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were appointed, with cymbals of 20 brass to sound aloud; and Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with 21 psalteries set to 'Alamoth; and Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps set 22 to 2the Sheminith, to lead. And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was over the song: he instructed about the song, because he was skilful. 23, 24 And Berechiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark. And Shebaniah, and Joshaphat, and Nethanel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, did blow with the trumpets before the ark of God: and Obed-edom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark.
