O Thou Almighty Being! every where Thy presence moves through universal space, And fills alike the whole material world. Thy presence now is o'er me! thy breath within me ! And, though but a particle of dust, thine eye rests on me! Thou know'st the darkness of my erring mind; Thou see'st the trembling awe that o'er me steals In contemplating Thee-the triune God. THERE cannot be a more solemn and affecting sight than a crowded congregation, apparently uniting in prayer and praise to an Almighty and Invisible Being. If every heart did but accompany the lip, what an "acceptable offering" would ascend to the throne of grace! what blessings would be showered down upon us, nationally and individually! For, it is written, "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wickedness; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." "Ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you; and ye shall seek me and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." Can rational and immortal creatures forbear exclaiming, "O Lord of all power and might! thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come?" But, let us ever remember, it is to the heartfelt prayer, not to the lip-confession or listless supplication, |
