A Service for Choirs and Congregations

AT THE

REHEARSALS OF CHURCH MUSIC.

Let us pray. (All kneeling.)

OUR Father, &c.

O LORD, Who knowest the imperfection of all things we do, sanctify, we beseech Thee, both our hearts and bodies to Thy service, that we may engage in the work of Thy sanctuary with reverence and godly fear; and that our lips may offer unto Thee an acceptable sacrifice, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, open Thou our lips. [See page 20, Common Praise.]
Response. And our mouths shall show forth Thy praise.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

Praise ye the Lord.

R. The Lord's name be praised.

Chant the 84th Psalm, with Gloria Patri.

The Lord be with you. [See page 20, C. P.]

R. And with Thy Spirit.

Let us pray.

O Lord, show Thy mercy upon us.

R. And grant us Thy salvation.

V. O God, make clean our hearts within us.

R. And take not Thy Holy Spirit from us.

GRANT, O Lord, that what we shall say or sing with our mouths we may believe in our hearts; and that what we believe in our hearts we may fulfill in our lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ACCEPT, O Lord, we beseech Thee, the hearty endeavors of us Thy humble servants to praise Thy Holy Name, and grant that the work wherein we are engaged may by Thy grace be made effectual to the advancement of our souls in Thy Faith, Fear, and Love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Benediction.

The grace of our Lord, &c.

Private Devotions for Choristers.

BEFORE SERVICE.

O LORD, open Thou my lips, that my mouth may show forth Thy praise, and purify my heart that I may worthily magnify Thy glorious Name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen..

AFTER SERVICE.

GRANT, O Lord, that what I have sung with my mouth that I may believe in my heart, and what I believe in my heart I may steadfastly fulfil in my life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Questions for Daily Self-eramination.

I. HAVE I said my usual prayers carefully and earnestly?

II. Have I been unmindful of God's presence, and done any thing in secret which I should be ashamed or afraid to do openly?

III. Have I been disobedient or rebellious?

IV. Have I been ill-tempered or hurt anybody by word or deed?

V. Have I been slothful or greedy?

VI. Have I said any thing impure, profane, or false?

VII. Have I willfully indulged wicked thoughts?

Dualifications.

I. ABILITY to read music at sight; at least a knowledge and daily practice of the scale. II. A thorough acquaintance with vocal music demands like good reading: first, Correctness of Enunciation; second, Quality, with reference to purity, fullness, and pliancy of voice; third, Emphasis; fourth, Expression.

III. Quick perception of the language and music of praise with a reverent expression of the same.

IV. Neat attire, promptitude, and regularity.

V., Religious character very important. When other qualities are sufficient, preference will be given to communicants of the Church.

VI. A correct style of chanting can only be acquired by the practice of all the exercises of Elocution. This will not only strengthen and improve the voice, but render the service of Worship more solemn and effective.

The Elements of Vocal Music.
