By WILLIAM SANDAY, D.D., LL. D.,
Lady Margaret Professor and Canon of
Christ Church, Oxford. 248 pages, 12mo.
$1.25 net (postage 12 cents).

This work is a marvel of compression, taking as it does within its scope a broader field than the term "Life of Christ' ordi

narily includes. It shows how the life of Christ can constantly be subjected to fresh treatment and made to yield new results.

A trained newspaper man with eyes and ears open and with note-book and camera in hand went on an Army Transport to the Philippines, and tells us what he saw and learned from officials, business men and missionaries during his travel in what he is pleased to call the "Gems of the Orient." Dr. Devins, on steamers and trains and launches and in army wagons and on horseback, visited every place that would add to his knowledge of the problems which he was studying. Secretary Taft, who contributes the foreword, then closing his last year as Governor of the Philippines, facilitated his errand in every way possible.

Mr. MacFarlane says of him, after fifty years' acquaintance: "He was a man in a generation, and one of the greatest Gospel ministers in his day. He walked with God. Editorial Notes

The present number of THE CALEDONIAN begins the fifth year of its publication. As we stated at the outset, our aim has been to reflect the religious and moral, as well as the intellectual and social, life of the Scottish people of birth or descent at home or abroad. We believed, at the date of our first issue, that there was room for a publication of this kind in America, and the success that we have achieved is the best proof that we were not mistaken. We began by stating that we were not in any sense in competition with any other magazine or newspaper. The universal kindly spirit which has distinguished the allusions t our publication by the press generally is the best proof that we are at peace with our neighbors. Our aim skal. continue to be to present an epitpine of the best thoughts of the best Scottish writers of our time, together with brief reports of leading events among the Scots at home and abroad, biographical sketches of the lives of our countrymen who have become distinguished in some path of human endeavor, besides selections of general interest to all. In the popular feature of illustrations, particularly of portraits of eminent Scots, it is our intention to enlarge this department, as it has met with the warmest approval; and in addition to these features it will be our constant aim in the future as it has been in the past to maintain the high religious and moral standard of teaching inculcated in the minds of the people of Scotland, and which has been the chief principle that has sustained them in their life's work.

Many of the officers of the leading Scottish societies and clans in America have rendered us valuable aid by sending occasional reports of their transactions, and while we have not been able to make this feature of our work all
