386 Our life like a race. 1. CORINTHIANS. The Jews our examples.

12 If others be partakers of this power. 2 And were all baptized unto Molts over you, Are not we rather? Neverthe- in the cloud and in the fea; 3 And did all eat the fame fpiritual

lefs, we have not ufed this power; but futter all things, left we should hinder the gofpel of Chrift.

15 Do ye not know that they which minifter about holy things live ofthe things of the temple? And they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar ? 14 Even fo hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the golpel fhould live of the golpel.

15 But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be fo done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man hould make my glorying void.

16 For though I preach the gofpel, have nothing to glory of: for neceffity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, it I preach not the gospel!

meat;

4 And did all drink the fame fpiritual drink; for they drank of that fpiritual Rock that followed them; and that Rock was Chrift.

5 But with many of them God was not well pleafed for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we thould not luft af. ter evil things, as they also lufied.

7 Neither be ye idolaters, as coere fome of them; as it is written, The people fat down to eat and drink, and refe up to play.

8 Neither let us commit fornication, as fome of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. 17 For if I do this thing willingly, I have 9 Neither let us tempt Chrift, as fonie a reward: but if against iny will, a difpen-of them alfo tempted, and were defiroyed fation of the gospel is committed usio me. of ferpents.

18 What is my reward then? Verily 10 Neither murmur ye, as fome of that, when I preach the gofpel, I may them alfo murmured, and were destroyed make the gospel of Christ without charge, of the deftroyer. that I abuse not my power in the gospel. 19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; 2 To them that are without law, as without law, being not without law to God, but under the law to Chrift, that might gain them that are without law.

22 To the weak became 1 as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means fave fome.

23 And this I do for the gofpel's fake, that I might be partaker thereof with you. 24 Know ye not that they which run in a race, run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

25 And every man that triveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we are incorruptible.

26 I therefore forun, not as uncertainly; fo fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into fubjection: left that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a caftaway.

CHAP. X.

1 The Jews' facraments, 6 types of ours; and their punishments, 11 our examples.

MOREOVER, brethren, I would not that ye fhould be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all paffed through the fea;

11 Now all these things happened unto them for enfamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

12 Wherefore, let him that thinketh be ftandeth take heed left he tall.

18 There hath no temptation taken you but fuch as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that yeare able; but will with the temptation alfo make a way to efcape, that ye may be able to bear it.

14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, Ase from idolatry.

15 fpeak as to wife men; judge ye what I fay.

16 The cup of blefling which we blefs, Is [it not the communion of the blood of Chrift? The bread which we break, Is it not the communion of the body of Chrift?

17 For we being many are one bread, and one body; for we are all partakers of that one bread.

18 Behold Ifrael after the flesh : Are not they which eat of the facrifices partakers of the altar?

19 What fay I then? That the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in facrifice to idols is any thing?

20 But I fay, that the things which the Gentiles facrifice, they facrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye fhould have fellowthip with devils.

21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealouly? Are we ftronger than he?

Offences to be avoided.

Chap. xi.

23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. 24 Let no man feek his own, but every man another's wealth.

25 Whatfoever is fold in the fhambles, that eat, asking no question for confcience' fake :

26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

27 If any of them that believe not bid you to a feaf, and ye be difposed to go; whatfoever is fet before you, eat, asking no queftion for confcience fake.

28 But if any man fay unto you. This is offered in facrifice unto idols, cat not for his fake that shewed it, and for confcience' fake : for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

29 Confcience, I fay, not thine own, but of the other: for, Why is my liberty judged of another man's confcience?

30 For if I by grace be a partaker, Why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

Of the Lord's fupper. 837

10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head, because of the angels.

f. Nevertheless, neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.

12 For as the woman is of the man, even fo is the man alfo by the woman; but all things of God.

18 Judge in yourselves: Is it comely that woman pray unto God uncovered?

14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

a

15 But if a woman have long hair, it is glory to her for ber hair is given her for a covering.

16 But if any man feem to be contentious, we have no fuch cuftom, neither the churches of God.

17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praife you not, that ye come together not for the better but for the worfe.

18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divifions among you; and I partly believe it.

19 For there must be alfo herefies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifeft among you.

20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the

BE ye followers of me, even as I alfo
am of Chrift.

2 Now I praife you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.

8 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Chrift; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Chrift is God.

Every man praying or prophefying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.

5 But every woman that prayeth or Prophefieth with ber head uncovered, dif. honoureth her head; for that is even all one as if he were fhaven.

6 For if the woman be not covered, let her alfo be horn: but if it be a fhame for a woman to be thorn or fhaven, let her be covered.

21 For in eating every one taketh before orber his own fupper; and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

22 What? Have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or, Defpife ye the church of God, and shame them that have not ? What fhall I fay to you? Shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.

23 For I have received of the Lord that which alfo I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jefus, the fame night in which he was betrayed, took bread:

24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and faid, Take. eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 After the fame manner also be took the cup, when he had fupped, faying, This cup is the new teftament in my blood; this do ye, as oft as ye drink if, in remembrance of me.

26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do fhew the Lord's death till he come.

27 Wherefore whofoever shall eat this For a man indeed ought not to cov-bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, er his head, forafmuch as he is the image funworthily, thall be guilty of the body and glory of God: but the woman is and blood of the Lord. the glory of the man.

8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.

9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the women for the man.

28 But let a man examine himself, and fo let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cnp.

nation to himself, not difcerning the Lord's body.

30 For this caufe many are weak and fickly among you, and many fleep.

31 For if we would judge ourselves, we thould not be judged.

82 But when we are judged, we are chattened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

S3 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.

$4 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home that fe come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I fet in order when I come.

CHAP. XII.

not the hand, I am not of the body; Is it therefore not of the body?

16 And if the ear hall fay, Becaufe I am not the eye, I am not of the body; Is it therefore not of the body?

17 If the whole body were an eye, Where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the fmelling?

18 But now hath God fet the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleafed him.

19 And if they were all one member, Where were the body?

20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.

21 And the eye cannot fay unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

22 Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are neceffary:

23 And thofe members of the body, which we think to be lefs honourable, 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, car-upon these we bestow more abundant ried away unto thefe dumb idols, even as ye were led.

5 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man fpeaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jefus accurfed; and that no man can say that Jefus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghoft.

4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the fame Spirit.

5 And there are differences of adminiftrations, but the fame Lord.

6 And there are diverfities of operations, but it is the fame God which worketh all in all.

7¶ But the manifeftation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the fame Spirit;

9 To another faith by the fame Spirit ; to another the gifts of healing by the fame Spirit;

10 To another the working of miraeles; to another prophecy; to another difcerning of fpirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues :

11 But all these worketh that one and the felfsame Spirit, dividing to every man feverally as he will.

12 ¶ For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: fo alfo is Chrift.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit

honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

2. For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body togeth er, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:

25 That there should be no fchifm in the body; but that the members fhould have the fame care one for another.

26 And whether one member suffer, all the members fuffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

27 Now ye are the body of Chrift, and members in particular.

28 And God hath fet fome in the church, first apoftles, fecondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diverfities of tongues.

29 Are all apofiles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 50 Have all the gifts of healing? Do all fpeak with tongues? Do all interpret?

Si But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

CHAP. XIII.

1 All gifts, bow excellent fsever, are nothing worth without charity. The praises ibereof.

THOUGH I fpeak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as founding brafs, or a tinkling cymbal.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part fhall be done away.

13 Wherefore let him that fpeaketh in an unknown tongue, pray that he may interpret.

14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my fpirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

51 would that ye all fpake with tongues, but rather that ye prophefied for greater is he that prophefieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

16 Elfe when thou shalt bless with the fpirit, How fhall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned fay Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou fayeft?

17 For thou verily giveft thanks well, but the other is not edified...

18 I thank my God, I fpeak with tongues more than ye all:

19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding that by my voice I might teach others alfo, thanten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

20 Brethren, be not children in underftanding: howbeit, in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I fpeak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, faith the Lord.

22 Wherefore tongues are for a fign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophefying ferveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all fpeak with tongues, and there come in thofe that are unlearned, or unbelievers, 6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you Will they not fay that ye are mad? MOREOVER, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which alfo ye have received, and wherein ye ftand;

17 And if Christ be not raifed, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your fins. 18 Then they alfo which are fallen afleep in Chrift are perished.

19 If in this life only we have hope in Chrift, we are of all wen mot miferable.

20 But now is Chrift rifen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that sept.

21 For fince by man came death, by man came alfo the refurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even fo in Chrift shall all be made alive.

24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he thall have pet down all rule and all authority and power.

25 For he must reign till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

26 The laft enemy that shall be defroyed is death.

27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he faith, all things are put under him, it is manifeft that he is exceptled which did put all things under him.

28 And when all things thall be fubdued junto him, then fhall the Son alfo helf be fubject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
