17. Thus from Abraham to David, are reckoned fourteen Generations;

likewife from David to the Babylonish Captivity, fourteen Generations; and from thence again to Chrift, fourteen Generations.

18. Now the Birth of Chrift was not after the manner of the rest of Mankind, in the ordinary and natural

11 And Jofias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon.

12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel, and Sa lathiel begat Zorobabel.

13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud, and Abiud begat Eliakim, and Eliakim begat Azor.

14 And Azor begat Sadoc, and Sadoc begat Achim, and Achim begat Eliud.

15 And Eliud begat Eleazar, and Eleazar begat Matthan, and Matthan begat Jacob.

16 And Jacob begat Jofeph the hufband of Mary, of whom was born Jefus who was called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abra

ham to David, are and from David unfourteen generations: til the carrying away into Babylon, are fourteen generations: and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ, are fourteen generations.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ

20 But while he

thought on thefe things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, faying, Jofeph, thou fon of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her, is of the holy Ghoft.

21 And the fhall -bring forth a son,and thou fhalt call his name Jefus for he fhall fave his people from their fins. 22 (Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was fpoken of the Lord by the prophet, faying, 23 Behold, a virgin fhall be with child, and fhall bring forth a fon, and they fhall call his name Emmanuel, (which being interpreted, is, God with us)

19. Jofeph perceiving her to be with Child without his Knowledge, was much troubled and disturbed at it, being yet wholly ignorant of the Divine Mystery. Nevertheless, being a good and compaffionate Man, he was So the unwilling to expofe her to publick word Shame, but refolved to put her away in the Old privately. Teftament

20. But while he was musing in his fignifies, Mind upon thefe Things, an Angel ap- thence d peared to him in a Dream, and faid; xa in Jofeph do not entertain any evil Thoughts concerning Mary your Wife; and in the for fhe is not only innocent of what you New Test. wrongfully fufpect her, but is also chofen of God to be the Inftrument of a great and miraculous Work. For the Child that is now conceived in her, is by the wonderful and immediate Power of the Holy Ghoft.

21. And the fhall be delivered of a

Son: and his Name fhall be called Jefus,
that is, The Saviour: For he fhall be
that long-expected Meffiah, who by
giving himself a Sacrifice for all past
Sins, and by publishing for the future
the gracious Terms of Faith and Re-
pentance, fhall deliver his People from
the dominion and punishment of Sin,
and bring them to everlafting Life.

22. And hereby fhall be most emi-
nently fulfilled that remarkable Prophe-
cy of Ifaiah, (Ifa. vii. 14.)
