prayed the thirdtime, wholly to the Divine Will and Pleafaying the words.

fame

45 Then cometh he to his difciples, and faith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your reft; behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of finners.

46 Rife, let us be going; behold, he

is at hand that doth
betray me.
47 And while he
yet fpake, lo, Judas

one of the twelve
came, and with him
a great multitude
with fwords and

ftaves from the chief
priests and elders of
the people.
48 Now he that
betrayed him, gave
them a fign, faying,

45. And returning to his Difciples, and finding them the third time fleeping, he faid; What, are ye yet overcome with fleep and drowsiness? Nay, ye may e'en fleep on now; I have conquer'd my Agony, and 'tis too late for your Watching to be any comfort or af fiftance to me now: The time of my Suffering is come, and I am just going to be betray'd into the Hands of wicked and malicious Men.

46. Come, rife, let us go; he that betrays me, is juft upon us.

47. Scarce had Jefus faid thefe Words, when fuddenly Judas appeared conducting a great Number of Offcers armed with Swords and Staves, who were fent from the chief Priests and Elders to feize Jefus in his private Retirements, Judas having undertaken

to be their Guide,

48. Now becaufe the Officers did not know Jefus's Face, and it was also Night; therefore, that they might not mistake the Perfon, Judas had given them a Token, that when he came up to Jefus, he would falute him with a Kifs; by which Sign they should know him, and not fail to apprehend and fecure him.

49. Coming up therefore to Jefus, he according to the appointed Signal, fa

luted and kiffed him.

50. Jefus, knowing his Defign, reproved his Ingratitude with this gentle, yet

fevere Rebuke; Friend, wherefore come you attended in this manner? But while he was fpeaking, the Officers feized him, and began to carry him away.

51. Then Peter, feeing to what extremity things tended; out of great Zeal for his Mafter's fafety, drew his Sword, and ftriking at one of the High Pricft's Servants, cut off a piece of his

Ear.

52. But Jefus forbad him to make ufe of his Sword, faying; These are not the Weapons which my Difciples must ufe. They who are impatient and paffionate, and ready upon every Provocation to run to the Sword, fhall themfelves be liable to perifh by the Sword, Our part is to overcome, not by fighting, but by Patience and Suffering.

53. Otherwife, If I had defigned to refift these Men, and wanted Affiftance to conquer them, do you not think I could eafily have pray'd to God, (and can even yet do it, if I thought it expedient) and he would prefently have fent me an Army of Angels to destroy them?

54. But how then should the Will of God and the Predictions of the Prophets have been fulfilled? For God fent me into the World, to fuffer and die, and the Prophets have foretold that I fhould do fo; and all these things muft needs be accomplished.

55. Then Jefus turning himself to the Multitude, faid; What makes you come out against me in the Night, with a Band of Soldiers, armed with Swords and Clubs, as if ye came to apprehend a Robber that would make ftrong Refiftance? Did I not every Day fit openly teaching in the Temple, and ye might have taken me when you plea

wherefore art thou come? Then came

they and laid hands on Jefus, and took him.

51 And behold, one of them that with Jefus, out his

hand, and drew his
fword, and ftroke a
fervant of the high
priests, and fmote off
his ear.

52 Then faid Jefus unto him, Put up again thy fword into its place; for all they that take the fword, fhall perish with the fword.

53 Thinkeft thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he fhall presently give me more than twelve legions of an• gels?

ple, and ye laid no hold on me.

56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the difciples forfook him,and fled.

57

And they that had laid hold on Jefus, led him away to Caiaphas the high prieft; where the scribes and the elders were affembled. 58 But Peter followed him afar off, unto the high priefts palace, and went in, and fat with the fervants to fee the end. 59 Now the chief priefts and elders, and all the council, fought falfe witnefs against Jefus to put him to death,

60 But found none:

yea, though many falfe witneffes came, yet found they none. At the laft came two falfe witneffes,

fed, if you had had any great Crime to lay to my Charge?

56. But now is the Time, wherein the Infinite Wisdom of God has appointed me to fuffer; and all these things ought thus to come to pafs, that the Scriptures might be fulfilled. Then all the Disciples, feeing there was no Remedy, and that Jefus himfelf would not fuffer them to try to rescue him, forfook him and fled.

57. Now they that had apprehended fefus, carried him to Caiaphas the High Prieft, in whofe House the Council of the Scribes and Elders were ready gathered together.

58. And Peter, having recovered his Fear a little, and taken Courage; followed them at a Distance to Caiaphas his Palace, and went in after them, and fat down among the Servants, to fee what the Event of this thing would be.

59. Then the Council, having gotten Jefus in their Power, fought for all the Witneffes against him they could; and like malicious Informers rather than juft Judges, contrived fo to examine them, as to urge them, if poffible, to testify fome thing against him, which they might judge to be a Crime worthy of Death.

60. But none witneffed fo much against him, as was fufficient to condemn him Nay, tho' many False Witneffes were fuborned on purpose, yet could not they convict him of any Capital Crime.

* réyove, which we render was done, may moft properly be rendered is done: And then thefe will be the Words, not of the Evangelift, but of Chrift; See Luke xxii. 53. But the Sense is the fame either way.

61. At laft there rose up two falfe Witneffes, who malicioufly mifreprefenting and mifinterpreting fome things which he had faid, and industriously putting the most odious Senfe upon Words which they did not understand; teftified against him, that he had declared, He could pull down the Temple of God, and build it up again in three Days.

62. To this when Jefus made no Reply, the High-Prieft ftanding up in a Paffion, faid; Have you nothing to fay for your felf? Can you make no Answer to the Accufation thefe Men bring against you?

63. But Jefus, knowing that they fought only to urge him to fay fomething which they might lay hold on, and turn to his Accufation, ftill held his peace. Then faid the High-Prieft; I adjure you folemnly by the dreadful and tremendous Name of God, in whofe Prefence you ftand, that you tell us plainly and truly, whether you be indeed the Meffiah, the Son of God,

64. Then Jefus confeffed, faying, I am; and ye fhall fhortly fee a convincing Evidence of it, in that wonderful and unparallelled Destruction which I will fend upon the Jewish Nation in the quick and powerful Progrefs which the Gospel fhall make over the Earth; and finally in my glorious Appearing to judge the World.

;

65. At this the High-Prieft in great Indignation rent his Clothes, faying; Here is manifeft and notorious Blafphemy; What need we trouble our felves to feek for any other Witnesses? This whole Affembly has now with their own Ears heard him speak plain and direct Blafphemy,

66. What think you of it? They all faid; This is manifeftly a Capital Crime, and worthy of Death.

67 & 68. Then began the Servants and common People to fall upon him as a Man already condemned; fpitting upon him, buffeting him, offering all manner of Rudenefs and Indignities to him: And fome hoodwinking him, ftruck him with their hands, and jeeringly faid; Now, you that pretend to be a great Prophet, fhow your Skill, and tell who it is that fmites you.

69. All this time Peter fat without in the Court among the Servants; and as he was fitting there, there came to him a Maid-Servant, who remembred fhe had feen him, and faid; I believe you were one of the Followers of this Jefus.

70. Peter furprized with Fear at this fudden Challenge, and forgetting his former Confidence, immediately denied it, faying; I know nothing of Jefus, neither can I tell what you mean.

71. Again, as he was going out into the Porch, another Maid-Servant feeing him, faid to those that stood by; Surely, That Man there, was one of Jefus's Followers.

72. But Peter hearing her, turned himself about, and, in a mixt Paffion of Fear and Anger, fwore that he never had any thing to do with Him.

73. A little after, another of the ftanders-by faid to Peter; Certainly, if I be not ftrangely mistaken, you were one of this Man's Difciples; For your very Speech fhoweth, you are a Galilean.
