THE ARGUMENT.

In the reign of the Roman emperor Nero, Vespasian is appointed to subdue the rebellious Jews-The Roman empire foretold by Daniel (chap. vii, verse 23.) -Vespasian goes into Syria, and sends Titus to Alexandria for troops-They meet and lay waste all Galilee Cruel fate of Gadara and the Samaritans— Of other cities-The zealots lay Judea waste-A vast slaughter of Jews upon the banks of the JordanVespasian hearing of Nero's death at Rome, leaves the conquest of Jerusalem to Titus, that he may be elected Emperor-Titus besieges Jerusalem-The city molested by two armies within, under the command of Simon and John of Giscala-Titus to prevent the Jews from going out, and that succour should be sent to them from the country, orders a wall of about forty furlongs, with forts at intervals, to be raised round the city when the Jervs are assembled at the passover— As the besieged make their escape out of the city, they are overtaken by the Romans and crucified-So many are crucified, that at last they cannot find wood to make crosses, or space to put them when made―The avenging hand of God may be easily traced in this—

Great signs and fearful sights as foretold by our Saviour, related afterwards by Tacitus-A Roman soldier throws a flaming brand into the temple―The whole city and the temple are burnt to the groundThe prophecy of our Saviour is literally fulfilledThe destruction is so complete, that " one stone is not left upon another"-Compassionate reflection upon the fate of Judea-Her future glory.
