I love thy law, and may thy truth be my delightful meditation. May I build on thy promises my best hopes, and bind thy precepts to my heart. From the services of the past day may I derive new relish for truth and piety, new strength to my holy purposes, and invigorated zeal in the Christian course. May my faith become more firm, my hope more lively, my love of thee more fervent, my love to my fellow men more kind and expanded, and my heart more pure and tranquil. Help me to return to the usual engagements of life better disposed to fulfil its duties; better prepared to resist its temptations and to support its trials. Help me to look forward beyond the services of thy house of prayer, and beyond the duties and scenes of daily life, and to raise my views, my ardent hopes and strong desires, to the future assembly of the righteous, and to the nobler worship of thy heavenly temple.

I now pour out my humble and ardent prayers, that the homage, and honour, and praise offered to thee on this day, may awaken

and diffuse the spirit of piety: that the prayers of my fellow Christians for the advancement of the kingdom of Jesus, for the happiness of the nation, and for the comfort and deliverance of the afflicted may be acceptable; and that the laws of righteousness which have been promulgated may be universally obeyed, and the word of salvation which hath been preached may be most cordially and thankfully embraced. May the ordinances of religion be duly improved, and the seed of the word produce a rich harvest. May grace, mercy and peace rest on all who have bowed before thy throne. Defend me through the night from evil; and let thy favour and mercy, most gracious God, ever descend on all thy dependent creatures, and on me, a candidate for thy everlasting mercy in Jesus Christ, the mediator of the new, better and everlasting covenant.

Amen.

A PRAYER FOR MONDAY MORNING.

GREAT and gracious God, the God of my life and the length of my days! I am ever under the notice of thine eye, I am ever sustained by thy supporting hand. The night bears testimony to thy watchful providence, securing me from evil; the day, as it is renewed, calleth upon me to repose my hope and trust in thee. I bow before thee with a thankful sense of the goodness, which hath, after the day sacred to devotion, invigorated my powers of body and mind, by refreshing sleep for the returning duties of active life. I thank thee and praise thee for those words of truth and salvation, which enlighten the mind with the principles of heavenly knowledge, and afford us precepts of righteousness to be the rules of conduct. I thank thee 1 that I am called forth to the virtuous and useful services of this life, and animated to every duty by the hope of that eternal life which is thy gift in Jesus Christ.

May I enter on another day and another week, sensible of the nature and importance of that work which thou hast given me to do, both as an inhabitant of this world, and as designed for immortality. Enable me to fulfil all the duties of life faithfully and diligently, maintaining a conscience void of offence towards thee, my God, and towards all men. May I look to Jesus, my pattern, who hath set before me a bright example of diligence and zeal, in doing the work which thou gavest him to do, before the night of death closed the day of his ministry. May I learn of him to guard against the temptations which would divert me from a holy, benevolent and upright course; or would obstruct my progress in it. Thou, my heavenly Father, knowest the snares which beset me, and the dangers which threaten me: prepare me, O my God, to meet them; assist me to overcome them. In thee is my strength and my help, and to thee I humbly and earnestly look up for wisdom and strength, that may be sufficient for me.

Unknown and untried are many of the temptations to which I am daily exposed ; may I enter on this day and on every day, with pious fear; may I be watchful and circumspect; may I proceed in every pursuit of life with modesty, prudence and caution.. Whatever occurences, tending to ruffle and discompose my spirits, shall arise, may I possess my soul in patience. Under provocations from men, may I be able to preserve the meekness and gentleness of Christ. Amidst anxious cares, under the failure of my schemes, under worldly losses, and the disappointment of my hopes, may I maintain inward tranquillity and peace, remembering that all things are under the direction of unerring wisdom and paternal goodness. May I cast all my cares upon thee in a joyful persuasion that thou, my heavenly Father, carest for me; and may that peace of thine which passeth all understanding, fill my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. May no prospect of advantage or gain, ever prevail with me to practice impositions, or to violate integrity,
