and honour, in the transactions of trade or the labours of my station. If sinners entice me, if the manners and maxims of the world offer to pervert my ways, give me understanding to perceive their folly, and resolution to withstand their force. May no irregular working of my own thoughts, nor the violence of appetite, disturb the peace, or defile the purity, of my heart. Let no secrecy betray me into any sin for which my own reflections would reproach me; and which thou, who seest in secret, wilt condemn. In every moment of trial possess my soul with those principles of faith which inspire fortitude and constancy, and overcome the world. In all my converse with others, and in the hours of relaxation, assist me to guard against those circumstances, which are apt to irritate the passions, or to corrupt the mind. Against whatever would raise anger, or lead to excess, may I carefully and religiously guard. May I study that decorum, that self-command, which will secure the purity and dignity of a deportment, worthy the Christian profes

sion, and may I exercise the benevolence, candour and kindness which become him who hath imbibed the lessons of the wisdom that is from above; the wisdom that is pure, peaceable, gentle and full of good fruits. May I ever act under a sense of thy presence with me; and be governed by an ardent desire of thy approbation. Thus may I pass through the ensnaring scenes of this world, without being ensnared by them; and meet the trying events of life, without making shipwreck of faith and good a conscience. Thus

may I finish my course with joy, and lay hold of that crown of righteousness and life which our Lord, who hath overcome the world as our exemplar, will give to all them who love his appearance. Among them may all those be who are united to me by the endearing ties of blood and friendship. Among them all those be who have endured temptation. Having been more than conquerors through him that loved us, may they and I be made partakers of the eternal salvation from temptation and danger, which is Christ Jesus. Amen,

A PRAYER FOR MONDAY EVENING.

ALMIGHTY and gracious, unchangeable and everlasting God, who hearest prayer! to thee should all flesh come, bowing before thee, with sentiments of reverence, gratitude and trust. Thou hast a claim to the homage of all thy creatures, for thy dominion ruleth over

all. Thou art entitled to the confidence of all dependent beings, for thy wisdom is unerring, and thy goodness endureth for ever. In the morning it is my duty and privilege to commit myself unto thee, through all the circumstances of the day. At night it is my consolation to repose myself in thy protection, through the defenceless hours of sleep. Thou hast preserved me, O guardian of my life, through the past day. Thus far hast thou brought me, upheld me in being, supplied my wants and ministered to my enjoyments. I praise thee, my Maker, for the faculties and powers by which I am rendered

capable of knowing, loving and serving thee, and of forming the habits and enjoying the pleasures and hopes of benevolence and devotion Health, strength, safety, food, raiment, friends and success,are, in every measure and degree, from thee; and to thee I offer my tribute of unfeigned praise for the share I have in these blessings. With the warmest emotions of gratitude I would praise thee for the assistances of thy gracious and merciful goodness in Jesus Christ; for the light, aids and privileges of the gospel; for sending Jesus Christ into the world to redeem us from all iniquity; and for the hopes and prospects of a happy immortality, given us through him.

How can I sufficiently admire thy goodness ! How can I worthily utter thy praise! Oh! May my heart ascend to thee, in a pure and lively flame of devotion, with joyful acknowledgments and thanksgivings. Not with my lips only, not merely in the moments of devout retirement, may I own thy goodness;

but by walking before thee under the eye of men, in holiness end righteousness of life, may I praise and glorify thy name.

Forgive, O Lord, most merciful and gracious, every instance of forgetfulness of thee and of thy goodness, with which I am chargeable. It becometh me to confess with shame, that I have not rendered unto thee according to thy benefits, nor made a due improvement of my temporal or spiritual advantages and blessings. My hope of the forgiveness of whatever has been amiss or sinful through this day, in thought, word, or deed, is in the riches of thy mercy; for with thee there is plenteous redemption.

Endue me with wisdom, with serious thought, and with resolution of mind to repent of every thing wrong or defective in my temper and conduct. Lead me to the more faithful discharge of all the duties which I owe to thee, my heavenly Father, to my own self, and my eternal interests, to my family,
