LUKE XXIII.

When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man 7 were a Galilean. And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself 8 was also at Jerusalem at that time. And when Herod saw

Jesus, he was exceeding glad; for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.

MATTHEW XXVII.

15 Now at that feast the

governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would. 16 And they had then a no

table prisoner, called Barab17 bas. Therefore, when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them; Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas? or Jesus, which is called Christ? 18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

19 When he was set down on the judgment-seat, his wife sent unto him, saying; Have thou nothing to do with that just man; for have suffered many things this day in a dream because 20 of him. But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude, that they should ask Barabbas, and 21 destroy Jesus. The gover

Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. 7 And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the 8 insurrection. And the multitude crying aloud, began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them. 9 But Pilate answered them, saying; Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews? For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. 11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto 12 them. And Pilate answered,

9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he 10 answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes I stood, and vehemently accused him. And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate. 12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together; for before they were at enmity between themselves.

But ye have a custom that I should release unto you one at the passover; will ye therefore, that I release unto you the King of the 40 Jews? Then cried they all again, saying; Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

And Pilate, when he had | 39 called together the chief priests, and the rulers, and 14 the people, said unto them; Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people; and behold, I having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man, touching those things whereof ye ac15 cuse him. No, nor yet Herod; for I sent you to him, and lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him. 16 I will therefore chastise him, 17 and release him. For

of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast. 18 And they cried out all at once, saying; Away with this man, and release unto 16 us Barabbas; who, for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was 20 cast into prison. Pilate

When Pilate saw that he 15 could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying; I am in- 16 nocent of the blood of this just person; see ye to it. 25 Then answered all the people, and said; His blood 17 be on us, and on our child26 ren. Then released he Barabbas unto them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be 27 crucified. Then the 19

And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, was delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified. And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Pretorium; and they call together the whole band. And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his 18 head. And they began to salute him; Hail, King of the Jews! And they smote him on the head with a reed. and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees, worshipped him. I have found no cause of death in him; I will therefore chastise him, 23 and let him go. And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified.

Pilate went, forth again, and saith unto them; Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. 5 (Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe.) And Pilate saith unto them; 6 Behold the man! When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying; Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them; Take ye him, and crucify him; for I 7 find no fault in him. The Jews answered him; We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he
