LESSON. Jer. i. 4. 10.

N those days: The word of the Lord came to me,

thee; and before thou camest forth from the womb, I sanctified thee, and appointed thee a prophet among the

nations. Then I said: Ah! ah! ah! Lord God, behold I cannot speak, for I am a child. And the Lord said to me: Say not; I am a child; for thou shalt go about whatever I send thee: And shalt speak whatever I command thee. Fear not their presence: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Then the Lord put forth his hand, and touched my mouth and the Lord said to me: Behold I have put my words in thy mouth: behold I have set thee this day over nations and kingdoms, to pluck up, and pull down, to destroy and scatter, to build up and to plant, saith the Lord Almighty.

GRAD. John i. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. V. he came to bear testimony of the light, and to prepare for the Lord a perfect people. GOSPEL. Luke i. 5. 17.

IN

N the days of Herod, King of Judea, there was a certain priest called Zacharias, in the course of Abia; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous in the sight of God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord without blame; and they had no son, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years. And it came to pass that while he executed the priestly function, in the order of his course, before God, according to the custom of the priestly office, he went forth by lot to offer incense, going into the temple of the Lord. And all the multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense. And there appeared to him an Angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And Zacharias seeing him, was frightened and seized with dread. But the Angel said to him: Fear not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John: and thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice at his birth: for he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink, and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb: and he shall convert many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the unbelieving ones to the wisdom of the righteous, to prepare for the Lord a perfect people.

OFFERT. Thou has crowned. COMMON, p. xxi. SECRET. Sanctify, O Lord, the offerings we have made to thee, and by the intercession of blessed John the Baptist, and the efficacy of these mysteries, cleanse us from the stains of our sins. Thro'.
