Dictation.—Torrid means hot. The Torrid Zone is the hottest part of the earth. It is always summer there. The rain falls almost every day for six months. The rest of the year the ground is parched.

Dictation.–Sugar-cane is a kind of grass. It grows twice as high as a tall man. The stem is jointed. The leaves are long and look like ribbons. It grows in warm countries. When the canes are ripe, they are cut and taken to the mill to be pressed. The juice is boiled and then slowly cooled. The sugar is a soft mass in the middle, with molasses all around it. It has to be made white for our use. This is called refining it.
