(1) This Expression is not to be taken in the most general Sense; but to be limited to things lawful, and in their own Nature indifferent. As if the Apostle had faid, Whatsoever the Jewish Teachers may advance, whatever Commandments of Men from their most celebrated Doctors, respecting Meats, or Perfons, or Things, they may teach, unto the Pure, to him who lives foberly, righteously, and godly, and useth no other Liberty than the Gospel gives, all things in their own Nature indifferent are pure; what he eats and touches does not defile him: but to them that are defiled and unbelieving, to them that are immoral and wicked, and obstinately continue in their Unbelief, even the things which they account pure and clean are not pure; for their Mind and Confcience being defiled, their Actions are defiled, and to them nothing is pure.
