Prov. viii. 32-36. C. M. WATTS APPY the child whose youngest years

H Receive instruction well;

Who hates the sinner's path, and fears
The road that leads to hell.

2 When we devote our youth to God,
"Tis pleasing in His eyes:

A flower, when offered in the bud,
Is no vain sacrifice.

3 "Twill save us from a thousand snares,
To mind religion young;

Grace will preserve our following years,
And make our virtue strong.

4 To Thee, Almighty God, to Thee,
Our childhood we resign;

"Twill please us to look back, and see
That our whole lives were Thine.

5 Let the sweet work of prayer and praise
Employ my youngest breath;
Thus I'm prepared for longer days,
Or fit for early death.

Psalm c. 4. L. M.

ORD, how delightful 'tis to see

WATTS.

A whole assembly worship Thee: At once they sing, at once they pray; They hear of heaven, and learn the way. 2 I have been there, and still would go ; "Tis like a little heaven below:

Nor cares nor pleasures in the way
Shall tempt me to forget this day.
3 O write upon my memory, Lord,
The texts and doctrines of Thy word;
That I may break Thy laws no more,
But love Thee better than before.

4 With thoughts of Christ, and things divine,
Fill up this foolish heart of mine;
That, having pardon through His blood,
I may lie down, and wake with God.

Mark xvi. 2-6. C. M.

WATTS.

1 HIS is the day when Christ arose
So early from the dead;

Why should I keep my eye-lids closed,
And waste my hours in bed?

2 This is the day when Jesus broke
The powers of death and hell;
And shall I still wear Satan's yoke,
And love my sins so well?

3 To-day with pleasure Christians meet,
To pray and hear Thy word;
And I would go with cheerful feet,
To learn Thy will, O Lord.

4 Help me to hear, to praise, to pray,
And so prepare for heaven;

O may I love this blessed day,
The best of all the seven !

Matt. xxi. 15. L. M. T. R. TAYLOR.

THERE was a time when children sang
The Saviour's praise with sacred glee,
And all the hills of Judah rang

With their exulting jubilee.

2 Oh! to have joined their rapturous songs,
And swelled their sweet hosannas high,
And bless'd Him with our feeble tongues,
As He-the Man of Grief-went by !
3 But Christ is now a glorious King,
And angels in His presence bow:
The humble songs that we can sing,
Oh! will He, can He, hear them now?

4 He can, He will, He loves to hear The notes which babes and sucklings raise ; Jesus, we come with trembling fear;

Oh! teach our hearts and tongues Thy praise.

5 We join the hosts around Thy throne, Who once, like us, the desert trod ; And thus we make their song our own"Hosanna to the Son of God !"

873 Matt. xxi. 9. L. M. MONTGOMERY.

WH

THAT are those soul-reviving strains, Which echo thus from Salem's plains? What anthems loud and louder still, Sweetly resound from Zion's hill?

2 Lo! 'tis an infant chorus sings,
Hosanna to the King of kings.

The Saviour comes, and babes proclaim
Salvation, sent in Jesus' name.

3 Nor these alone their voice shall raise,
For we will join this song of praise.
Still Israel's children forward press,
To hail the Lord their Righteousness.
4 Messiah's name shall joy impart
Alike to Jew and Gentile heart.
He bled for us, Ho bled for you,
And we will sing hosanna too.
5 Proclaim hosannas loud and clear;
See David's Son and Lord appear:
Glory and praise on earth be given;
Hosanna in the highest heaven!

Luke xviii. 15-17.

P. M.

1 I THINK, when I read that sweet story

of old,

When Jesus was here among men,

How He called little children, as lambs to His fold,

I should like to have been with Him then. I wish that His hands had been placed on my head,

That His arm had been thrown around me, And that I might have seen His kind look when He said,

"Let the little ones come unto me."

2 Yet still to His footstool in prayer I may go, And ask for a share in His love;

And if I thus earnestly seek Him below,
I shall see Him and hear Him above,
In that beautiful place He has gone to
prepare

For all who are washed and forgiven; And many dear children are gathering there,

"For of such is the kingdom of heaven."

3 But thousands and thousands who wander and fall,

Never heard of that heavenly home;
I should like them to know there is room
for them all,

And that Jesus has bid them to come.
I long for that blessed and glorious time,
The fairest, and brightest, and best,
When the dear little children of every clime
Shall crowd to His arms and be bless'd.

Matt. viii. 11.

WHO are they whose little feet,

8 7's.

Pacing life's short journey through, Now have reached that heavenly seat They had ever kept in view?

PP

"I, from Greenland's frozen land;
I, from India's sultry plain;
I, from Afric's barren sand;
I, from islands of the main.
2" All our earthly journey past,
Every tear and pain gone by,
Here together met at last,
At the portal of the sky."

Each the welcome "come" awaits,
Conquerors over death and sin;
Lift your heads, ye golden gates,
Let the little travellers in.

Mark xvi. 15.

AND are there countries far away,

Where Bibles never go?

Fruitful, and beautiful, and gay,
But lost in sin and woe.

2 "Go, preach my gospel," Jesus said;
To every creature bear
The stream of life, the living bread,
And I will bless you there.

3 Lord, let us go, or let us send
This word of truth abroad;
Gladly our little help we'll lend,
That men may know the Lord.

4 Some childish pleasures we resign,
And this one pleasure choose;
To teach the heathen they are Thine,
And send the gospel news.

[blocks in formation]

ROUND the throne of God in heaven

A Thousands of children stand;

Children whose sins are all forgiven,

A holy, happy band;

Singing glory, glory, glory.
