is fhed abroad in our Hearts by the Holy Ghoft which is given to us. Rom. v. 5. Wherefore alfo, he fays in another Place, the Fruit of the Spirit is Love. Gal. v. 22. So St. John tells us--Love is of God. 1 John iv. 7. For the fame Reafon the fore-cited Apoftle calls the Holy Ghoft, the Spirit of Love. And St. John fays again-God is Love. That is, he is effentially fo in himself, and, communicatively so, to us in Operation and Effect. And,
This has brought me about to a full Refolution of the Queftion, which I did, in this Part chiefly fet out upon; even demonftrating wherein Faith, is the Part of Man, and wherein it is the Gift of God; wherein the faid Father of the Demoniac Child believed, and wherein he nevertheless ftill wanted help to his unbelief. And,
By a like Distinction we may account for Repentance, in what Refpects it is the Act of Man, and, in what, it is the Gift of God. For, in Fear and Trembling at the Word of God, as above, it is the Part of Man; but, for Converting the Heart to God, in drawing it with the Cords of his Love, by his Holy Spirit, to himself; it is the Gift of God.
