2 But who shall reach thy holy place,
Or who, O Lord, ascend thy hill?
The pure in heart shall see thy face,
The perfect man that doth thy will.

3 He who to bribes hath closed his hand, To idols never bent the knee,

Nor sworn in falsehood, he shall stand Redeemed, and owned, and kept by thee.

TATE & BRADY.

The Man whom God approves. Ps. 24.

1 THIS spacious earth is all the Lord's;
The Lord's her fulness is;

The world, and all that dwell therein,
By sovereign right are his.

2 But for himself, this Lord of all
One chosen seat designed:

O who shall to that sacred hill
Deserved admittance find?

3 The man whose hands and heart are pure, Whose thoughts from pride are free; Who honest poverty prefers

To gainful perjury.

4 This, this is he, on whom the Lord
Shall shower his blessings down;
Whom God his Saviour shall vouchsafe
With righteousness to crown.

DODDRIDGE.

Walking with God.

1 THRICE happy souls, who, born from heaven
While yet they sojourn here,
Do all their days with God begin,
And spend them in his fear.

2 'Midst hourly cares, may love present
Its incense to thy throne;

And while the world our hands employs,
Our hearts be thine alone.

3 As sanctified to noblest ends,

Be each refreshment sought;
And by each various providence
Some wise instruction brought.

4 When to laborious duties called,
Or by temptations tried,

We'll seek the shelter of thy wings,
And in thy strength confide.

5 As different scenes of life arise,
Our grateful hearts would be
With thee amidst the social band,
In solitude with thee.

6 In solid, pure delights like these,
Let all our days be past;

Nor shall we then impatient wish,
Nor shall we fear the last.

The Christian Israel.

MONTGOMERY.

1 THUS far on life's perplexing path,
Thus far thou, Lord, our steps hast led,
Snatched from the world's pursuing wrath,
Unharmed though floods o'erhung our head:
Like ransomed Israel on the shore,
Here then we pause, look back, adore.

2 Strangers and pilgrims here below,
Like all our fathers, in their day,
We to the land of promise go,
Lord, by thine own appointed way:
Still guide, illumine, cheer our flight,
In cloud by day, in fire by night.

3 Protect us through the wilderness,
From every peril, plague, and foe;
With bread from heaven thy people bless,
And living streams where'er we go;
Nor let our rebel hearts repine,
Or follow any voice but thine.

4 Thy holy law to us proclaim,
But not from Sinai's top alone;
Hid in the rock-cleft be thy name,
Thy power and all thy goodness, shown;
And may we never bow the knee,
Or worship any God but thee.

5 When we have numbered all our years,
And stand at length on Jordan's brink,
Though the flesh fail with mortal fears,
O let not then the spirit sink;

But strong in faith, and hope, and love,
Plunge through the stream, to rise above!

Resolution and Example.

1 АH wretched souls, who strive in vain, Slaves to the world, and slaves to sin! A nobler toil may I sustain,

A nobler satisfaction win.

2 May I resolve, with all my heart,
With all my powers to serve the Lord;
Nor from his precepts e'er depart,
Whose service is a rich reward.

3 O be his service all my joy!
Around let my example shine,
Till others love the blest employ,
And join in labors so divine.

4 O may

I never faint nor tire, "Nor, wandering, leave his sacred ways; Great God! accept my soul's desire, And give me strength to live thy praise.

Fortitude founded on Godly Fear.

1 BLEST is the man who fears the Lord;
His well established mind,
In every varying scene of life,
Shall true composure find.

2 Oft through the deep and stormy sea The heavenly footsteps lie;

But on a glorious world beyond
His faith can fix its eye.

3 Though dark his present prospects be,
And sorrows round him dwell,
Yet hope can whisper to the soul,
That all shall issue well.

4 Full in the presence of his God,
Through every scene he goes,
And, fearing him, no other fear
His steadfast bosom knows.

MORAVIAN.

The Christian encouraged.

1 GIVE to the winds thy fears;

Hope and be undismayed;

God hears thy sighs, and counts thy tears;
God shall lift up thy head.

2 Through waves, through clouds and storms,
He gently clears thy way;
Wait thou his time, so shall the night
Soon end in joyous day.

3 He everywhere hath rule,

And all things serve his might;
His every act pure blessing is,
His path unsullied light.

4 Thou comprehend'st him not;
Yet earth and heaven tell,
God sits as sovereign on the throne;
He ruleth all things well.

5 Thou seest our weakness, Lord,
Our hearts are known to thee:
O, lift thou up the sinking hand,
Confirm the feeble knee!
