PREFACE.

A Vivid conception of the brevity as well as the uncertainty of life, and a profound conviction that it is the duty of every Christian not only to do good, but also as much and in as many ways as possible, have induced me to "speak" through the press "the things which I have made touching the king."

Verbal criticisms have been rigorously excluded, believing that most readers—to use John Bunyan's figure—fare better on "eating the meat" than "picking the bones." But, since bones are essential to meat, it is only right that they who distribute meat to the multitude should be able to pick it off the bones. Popular addresses should always, when possible, be the result of acquaintance with the Holy Writings in the original;—the result; not the process. Although the doctor descants not in the sick room on chemical affinities and anatomical mysteries, yet his success in killing disease and restoring health are the result of years of assiduous application.

The novel and ingenious theories of Dem and others respecting Gen. xlix. 10. have neither been hastily discarded nor ultimately accepted. We have not refused to taste the new wine, but we emphatically affirm, " the old is better."
